Morels 2021

Found my first morels of the 2021 season this morning... just emerging.
These are in the spillway area of farm pond here at the house, shaded by some black willows and a shellbark hickory cultivar grafted on pecan rootstock. I've 'seeded' this area with wash water from prior harvests over a number of years.

Christian Co., KY, zone 6. About 70 mi NW of Nashville, TN.
Earliest I've found them... and these are so tiny that I almost missed them today.

The blacks are popping in central Ohio. I found 63 this morning. Not very big, but I pick them when I can find them. 2 turkeys were gobbling about 200 yards away while I was picking.

Wow!!!

Starting to get a mixed bag of small, medium, and large ones in NE KS. Snow and colder weather may prolong the season a few days.

You guys have been busy. I haven't made it out yet, and 25 degrees this morning isn't helping things.

No rain and freezing temps almost every night here. I have never seen our trout streams this low and clear. Unusual, to say the least.

Youngest found a nice bunch of grays before this cold snap. A0735851-B13E-48C7-BEB7-31B517195D2E.png

I know this sounds crazy but we almost got tired of eating shrooms the last couple days!
We had a big popcorn bowl full of grays and one of half frees in the fridge and dehydrated them today to save for this winter. Internet said just soak in warm water ten to fifteen minutes and cook?

Amazing how they shrink down.

Does anyone hunt them in western Wisconsin (Eau Claire area)? I'm interested in giving it a try this year but could use some pointers regarding timing.

-John

As far as timing, I feel like when wild violets are just starting to flower and bloom is peak for finding greys and yellows.

I always have my best luck finding yellows around dead elm trees that have been shedding their bark for a few years. Greys are a bit more sporadic and I feel like they can be found anywhere.

For what it's worth, these observations have held true for both central MN and northern MO.

I hunted them around Fort McCoy and south through the driftless region when I was stationed there. It depends largely on the weather, but I would normally start finding them around the first or second week of May. Eau Claire would be about a week behind.
