Just throwing this out there to see yalls thoughts. Recently spoke with a nursery and the owner mentioned applying miracle grow throughout the summer months if you have the ability to do so to give fruit trees a push. Any thoughts? I apply fert at spring and end of July, another nursery owner told me to do this. Just wo during what you all recommend.

I only fertilize in the spring, but your climate could be different than mine.

I don’t want to push fall growth. I want them to harden off.

I fertilize from leaf break to about June. What they get depends entirely on what I want the tree to do. But pretty much everything get compost and/or compost tea.

Miracle Gro probably costs more than the same product from another brand or generic.

It really depends on your objectives. With a commercial operation or a back yard orchardist who is using the fruit, TLC to the trees (pruning, spraying, fertilizing...) to maximize production is needed. For wildlife trees, I'm focused on minimizing maintenance. Selecting disease resistant trees that do well in my climate and soils with little maintenance is key. I want volume of self sustaining trees that don't depend on me for production. I'm thinking of permaculture with the stress on "perma" and light on "culture".

Thanks,

Jack

If you do use a miracle grow type product , they supply a full list of micros , There are cheaper alternatives most well stocked ag supply has a generic version about $1.00 lb , you do not have to spray it use what you need dry to drip line of tree , never after july as mentioned you want the tree to harden off before fall especially zone 4 or zone 3 , cheap insurance use a quarter cup about 30 inches from trunk .

Quick? Regarding this, how often would you apply it? Say my dad waters once a week between may 15 and July 31st? Would you recommend 1/4 cup weekly or does that get spread out, clearly I'm clueless. Also would this take the place of the general fertilizer you guys apply in spring? Morse told me 1/4 cup of triple 19 for every year the tree is old? If I went the miracle grow route would I cut out the spring and late summer fert of 19

Some say to not fertilize the first year they are planted. I usually do not, put add a bit of pel lime to the hole and area as my pH tends to be low.

I only fertilize in spring around bud break then maybe again mid May. I start fertilizing fruit trees at third leaf, as trees get older I usually fertilize less.
To much can make tree grow to fast and droop or not make fruit, fertilizing to young can burn roots pretty easy.
I use a half cup to cup around drip line with triple 10 to triple 15 depending on what local grain elevator has available.

I don’t fertilize after first of June because rain is to undependable and I don’t want very much late summer growth.
I only have fruit trees for wildlife so they do not get babied. If I was growing commercial fruit I’m sure I would do it differently.

I would proceed with caution , If you go with the water soluble fert apply once ,, a good indication on fert and tree vigor is last seasons growth about 12 inches new growth we have found is about right , push trees to hard and hardiness and flavor are problems

Last year I planted some trees from Northern Whitetail crabs . Terry the owner suggested I give them Miracle Grow , he said give the trees 4 gallons of water first , and then ad the Miracle Grow to the 5 th gallon . I don't know if that's good or bad , but I followed his advice. I used the Walmart knock off brand "Expert Gardner" and I followed the schedule on the box of applying every two weeks.
