Mady's first deer

chummer

5 year old buck +
She has hunted with me every weekend since mid October except one. Sightings have been limited and I was worried she was loosing interest. Lucky for me she still thinks Dad is cool to hang out with. When Chainsaw invited us for a hunt we got very excited. Up at 4am, we made the drive up to be in a very well selected stand by Chainsaw as it became light. It didn't take long to see our first action. Two flags running in the distance. A little while longer we had the safety off on a pair of does. She probably had windows to shoot as the deer were inside 30 yards but this was the first time we went live and as deer do they found every tree and shrub to step behind on their way out of sight. About 11 we saw a buck way out. I tried calling him but he to disappeared. A couple minutes later a big buck appeared in the brush, again inside 40 yards. Like the doe he made it to 20 yards but never presented a clear shot(in her eyes). I saw a few chances I could have easily shot, if only we could have switched sides. After that very exciting encounter we took a break ending with us in a blind overlooking turnips. After passing a spike, a few does worked there way in. At 4pm we decided it is time to get serious about which doe to shoot. Then like a flash this bucks clears the field and starts chasing does all over. A couple does come back into the plot and he follows them out for a 50 yard shot. I knew the shot was good but the deer ran into the thick stuff. The enthusiasm from the shot to tracking the deer was something I have not seen in her before. After a 30 yard track she had her buck and we have a memory that will last forever. A huge thank you to Chainsaw and Anne for making it happen.

I might be a sap but this picture from the day might be my favorite. At 14, to still be her favorite person means everything. If only
we could keep them from growing up.

Congrats to you both. She looks very happy, and deservedly so. A lot of good meat on that boy. Have fun putting his rack on her wall.

Jeremy, You are welcome for what small part Anne and I had in making your day a successful hunt. You and Mady made it happen. It was a perfect hunt before it even started as you and Mady were prepared. You two had obviously practiced a lot and your three second shot exercise really paid off. Mady made a great shot on the buck but like many great shots what stood out the most in her first shot at a deer is that she chose the right shot to take. With one bullet she took out a lung and center hit the heart, something our famous outlaw neighbor gang have not done in thirty years. Mady's patience in waiting for the right shot will keep her welcome in every deer camp for life. We are so happy that we were able to share in the excitement of Mady's first deer. Being involved in your hunt was a special day for us as well.

Congratulations to Mady!
