Passed up a buck. Pretty mature. Hope I don't regret it but just not what I'm looking for this year. He worked his tail off for 90 minutes to prevent his doe from getting into a little piece of woods.

That's one dead deer he gets close to me

Yeah, I gave it serious thought. Have only 1 buck tag and 3 seasons for gun left. Would like to see if something can materialize on that plot we were discussing, when the cold comes in. I've also seen late seasons where 2 feet of snow come in and we can't even hunt because we don't have sleds. Congrats on your buck! He looked like a good heavy one also.

Nah it's about a 120 if I was guessing. Teeth look to be about 2.5 years old. He was a huge bodied guy though. Now he is in the freezer. Daughter added the smiley faces on the straps packages for some flair.

My little guy had success and connected this evening!! His second buck ever, he got his first last year. He was pretty excited but managed to make a very good shot. I’m sooo proud!

Congrats, that's great. How old is he?

10. He and his older brother ( 12 ) have to take turns going out hunting with me because they haven't gotten hunter safety yet. The older boy can take it now that he turned 12, but the younger has to wait to take it. They can hunt as long as I am there mentoring. But mentor law says I can only mentor one at any specific time.

That's interesting and I need to get brushed up on IL law. My oldest will be 9 next year but I still tell him he isn't mature enough yet. He's learning gun safety and is becoming proficient shooting lefty since we discovered he's left eye dominant. Your son got a fine 2nd deer. Congrats again.

Had a deer from last year show up tonight. My boy was the shooter however we couldn’t get him lined up the first time and let him walk away and the second time he caught us getting into position. He stopped right before he left the plot and I decided he was big enough to not let him go again. Really wish he could have gotten it lined up but that is what comes with being only 9.

Mort,
There is definitely a fine line with the maturity factor. It is legal here for the kids to be mentored VERY early but I held both mine off until they turned nine. Before that, like you say, they just were not mature enough for the physical aspect, but more importantly, the emotional aspect.

No age here and you can hunt with a youth or apprentice license but have to be with a licensed adult.

Booner21 that is an awesome buck. Congratulations!! It is good to see that the state wildlife agencies are giving us a bit more control with our kids. Maybe your state always has but ours is relatively new, ( within the last 6 or 7 years if I remember right ).
Now its just up to us as parents to make good decisions as well.

Thanks Same here used to have to take hunters safety before you could hunt. About 15 hours of class not saying it was a bad thing but now you can just do a youth license till they are 18 or a 1 year apprentice license to see how they like it. Finding 15 hours that you don’t have plans in a weekend is a tall order anymore.

Did you fling anything at it?
Just asking because I would have for years. Lately I’ve kinda become a cat person. Not so much so that ever feed one!!

Or god forbid have one in the house.

But their kind of cool...

I didn't, I think they are pretty cool. Common on my place but rare if not non existent on my dad's a mile over.

Snow began falling on my walk in this morning. IMG_20201124_071805917.jpg

This power line cuts through a swath of public a mile from the house. Flurries just starting now, supposed to total 3 inches. Mostly oaks on the south side and pines on the north. Hoping to catch a big doe crossing over to bed after chowing down. PXL_20201124_132641338.jpg

Change of conditions here as well. Light snow began falling on the walk in. Supposed to do this for the next 24 hours or so I think.

Any of you holding off this week after all the pressure of the weekend

This deer has let his guard down in the last 3 days. I've seen him in shooting lanes several times and this afternoon he came into the lowest and most secluded part of the food plot an hour before dark. He was starved to death and has broken off a G2 and a brow tine. I decided to let him go this time. He might even grow a bigger rack next year.
