Knife porn

I have a lot of knives, because my dad, my son and I like to give each other knives as gifts. Also, when I did competition shooting, Case was one of my sponsors, and gave me several knives. Below are some that you might like.

This first one is a gift from my son. Very unique:

These next two are a couple of favorites from my dad:

Those are some sweet knives I’m partial to that Alpha Hunter.

Not exactly knife porn, but what are everyone's thoughts on Outdoor Edge type knives with exchangeable blades? I use one as a field game processing knife and have a few replacement blades at all times. I think they dull fairly quickly, but the assurance of a sharp knife when you need it is helpful.

I can't speak directly to the the OE knives with interchangeable blades, but I've used a whitetail skinner for many years and really like it. The only issue I had with it was trying to sharpen the gut hook. I like the small compact design and I can reach up into a chest cavity with 2 hands and have little fear of cutting myself. IT works great for skinning. Eventually, I found that they make roofer blades for utility knives that work great for gut hooks. They are disposable, so when they get dull, I gut put a new blade in.

Thanks,

Jack

I’m not saying anything against the the replacement blade style knives they simply do not fill a nitch for me. I’ve been using Bucks S30V or their S35VN knives for hunting chores the last several years. First one I used was a Paklite Elite boning knife I gut, skinned, quartered and deboned the quarters with it and still shaved hair from my arm at that point. Now I will admit the skeletonized knives like that one are not my favorite for using. It was the first Buck knife I had in S30V and was curious how it would preform. Maybe I’ve become a steel snob but I love a lot of the newer premium knife steels on the market anymore. They take a very good working edge not screaming sharp like you can get with 420HC or 440C or carbon steel due to the larger carbides but they will hold that good working edge for a very long time. I also prefer fixed blade knives for hunting because I split the sternum and pelvis while gutting and doing that makes me a bit nervous with a folder. I’ve not seen a replacement blade knife yet that I thought could handle that chore.

I recently put up a barn at my retirement property. I've been hunting there on occasion in addition to the pine farm. I didn't want to have to take all my dressing, skinning, and quartering tools back and forth. I ended up buying a second set of tools. For the skinning knife I went with this:

Spyderco Moran Drop Point Fixed Blade Knife with 3.92" VG-10 Stainless Steel Blade and Premium Custom-Molded Boltaron Sheath - PlainEdge - FB02P

So far, it is been a great knife but I haven't used it enough to sharpen it yet, so I can't speak to it in the long term, but so far, I like it.

Thanks,

Jack

The flaking on that obsidian blade is a work of art!

It's become my go to knife for gutting and skinning. On the plus side, they're light, relatively inexpensive and you can always have a sharp blade. Also a good knife to learn sharpening on since it doesn't matter if you completely ruin the edge. Just pop in another blade. On the negative side, they do dull more quickly than some of my other knives. However, I find that I can process an entire deer without touching up the blade as long as I'm not hitting too much bone. I also have to be careful how I grip the knife. If I revert to a pinch grip like I use on my kitchen knives I tend to hit the blade release.

Are them 102’s

Holy crap! What do you do with them?
I have three sons I started buying them knives for Christmas the year my youngest was born. They have a pretty decent collection the youngest boy is still to young to fully appreciate them the middle boy is starting to like them the 18 year old likes them pretty well at this point. The oldest boy will get his out of the safe every now and then. I’ll probably keep buying knives for them for Xmas until they stick me in the ground. Most are Pro series knives or limited production runs some years I just get one for them but it’s not uncommon for me to buy them knives early in the year February ect… only to find a limited production run latter in the year those years they get two knives.

I have a weakness for damascus those are of impressive craftsmanship.
