How to get rid of it

Yearling... With promise
Hello all,
There are a lot of deer in near our home and sometimes they get wild too. We have kids and we are concerned about them. We are not able to send our kids out due to the fear of getting attacked. I have heard something about color blindness related to deer. Is it true?? Does deer dislike any color?? If we paint our home with any color which the deer dislikes, will we be able to get rid of them?? I'll read an article which had few color trends for spring. Please check it and let me know which color we shall use. We cannot hurt them as it is against law, but somehow we need to get rid of them?? Any suggestions regarding this are greatly welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Strangest sales pitch I've heard all week.

German Shepherd from the pound. Might want to send the kids away until the deer and dog are gone.

Deer are color blind. No house color would repeal them. No archery hunting in the area?

They don't like the smell of dry blood fertilizer but long term that won't solve the problem.

I'm with Jameson, a dog is your best bet. Even if it's just a little yippy dog.

I would tend to agree ^^^ at face value this looks like spam, but I'm willing to see if it is legit.

I missed the hidden link.

We'll see. From my seat it's easy to ban an ip :).

I hope I'm wrong as well but time will tell.

Hello all,
My question may seem silly, but I'm sorry I didn't have any other idea to get rid of them. Here no one seems to hunt them so we don't have any other option, and they sometimes get ferocious if they are with baby deer. Thanks for the link Kabic.. Will try the deer out repellent.. I cannot rest for few minutes when my kid goes to school. I used to take him to school, but everyday I'll be tensed thinking what if he comes home alone. It's just a horrible situation everyday. We didn't have any problem all these days, but recently my neighbor's dog was brutally attacked by a deer. My kid is too scared and he doesn't even go out after watching the dog being attacked. Is there any other way in which we can avoid them coming near our home areas??

While there are unusual incidents where deer have attacked humans or other animals, it is not typical deer behavior. Deer do well in suburbs and can become acclimated to people but still tend to avoid them. The behavior you describe is quite unusual. Where do you live that deer are regularly exhibiting such unusual behavior?

We are in Vancouver region.. They were very normal here.. They used to graze and run around, but recently they have become aggressive and unpredictable. They have completely lost their fear of humans.. I don't know if their weird behavior is due to the mating season?? I'm not sure though, but i'm very sure that we are not safe here.

That provides some insight. When populations are allowed to hit crisis levels deer can display some very strange behavior. When population levels force deer into close proximity to humans that don't act as predators, they can lose their fear. We had a similar but less acute problem in one area around here where an overpopulation and a company who owned a large tract of land had a president who was also a high ranking member of HSUS. The company refused to allow hunting. Deer started feeding out of peoples hands and learned they were not threat. It never got far enough for deer to become aggressive. The company sold the property to a developer who brought in hunters.

My guess is your problem is a political one. Until folks in your area get out of the PETA mindset and institute regular hunting, the problem will only get worse.

Thanks,

Jack

You are right Jack.. I think the folks here are trying to preserve nature. We too will support it if they don't harm us. But now the situation is out of control. Sometimes they used to fight and at last they'll hit and break our properties. Anyway I'll try the deer repellent which Kabic recommended. Hope it'll work well against them.

Preserving nature is a total myth. Nature by its very character is dynamic. We can manage nature conserve it and use it wisely, but preservation is a fallacy. I doubt deer repellent will have much effect in your extreme situation. Large dog breeds are probably your best short term alternative. In the long run, you need to push your government into a lethal deer management program that brings deer populations back into line with both the biological and cultural carrying capacity. Things like sharpshooting can be a short-term correction, but they are not cost effective in the long-run. Some kind of sustained hunting program it is most cost effective long-term solution. In areas where firearms are not practical because of dense population, bowhunting can be an effective tool.

Years ago, we had a problem in the Virginia suburbs of Washington DC with burgeoning deer populations. It was addressed before it got quite as bad as your situation. I was one of the founding members of an organization called Suburban Whitetail Management of Northern Virginia. The president is now Steven Barry. Here is the web site: http://deerdamage.org/. When we started the organization the biggest issue was political. Some folks hated the deer so much they were willing to do anything but their neighbors considered them pets and were feeding them. Lyme disease was a big factor and bringing some folks to their senses. At any rate, we started the organization as a private non-profit connecting experienced bowhunters with private property owners who wanted help. Eventually, the county governments did some studies and realized that the high deer populations were damaging the rest of the environment. They eventually got on board and developed their own deer management plans. They may be able to provide guidance for forming a similar organization in your area. However, it sounds that you have such restrictive hunting laws that you may need government to act to liberalize those laws for a private organization like this to begin in your area.

Best of luck,

Jack

Jack, what king of dog breeds will be the best against deer?? I don't want the dog to get hurt. It will be helpful if you suggest the dog breed making sure that they can stand against the deer. We also had the thought of electrical fence. But we were not sure whether they'll be helpful because our neighbor said that they may get more violent if they get hurt.. Will electrical fence work against them or will they have a reverse effect??

As far as dogs go, generally larger breeds tend to have more effect than the small yappy lap dog types. As far as fencing goes, deer easily can, but generally won't jump over a 5' solid fence. The reason is that they can't see what is on the other side and don't want to jump into danger. For fences they can see through like chain link, most 8' fences will be a significant deterrent but it is very rare for them to jump a 10' fence.

As far as electric fences go, standard fences are similar to chain link. Generally less expensive, and need wires close enough to keep deer from crawling through without getting shocked. There is an electric fence design called a Gallagher-style fence that is 3 dimensional. Deer can physically jump over it be generally won't. You can google Gallagher-style electric fence for more details. In extreme cases some folks I know have had to add an addition wire to the top of the ineer fence in this design.

Electric fences don't hurt deer or other animals in general. They will not become more aggressive if shocked by the fence, in fact the opposite will be true. They will associate the negative experience and avoid it in the future. I've used temporary Gallagher-style fences to protect attractive crops like soybeans while they were being established. One thing I also do is to train deer. I add a few strips of aluminum foil to the outer fence and smear peanut button on them. Deer will tend to smell and lick the peanut butter. The shock is a quick lesson for them to avoid the fence before they even try to break-in.

Thanks,

Jack

That's great.. So shall we install electric fence around our home?? Gallagher-style electric fence seems to be a great idea against deer. Thank you so much for your suggestion Jack. Will try them and hope that everything will be fine hereafter. Will take a decision soon and let you know.

image.jpg If you build a double layered fence as shown above you can keep deer away from anything. We use them to keep deer out of our food plots until they are ready. We also only energize the outer fence. You might not even need to use electricity, I have heard some guys just relying on the two fences to deceive the deers depth perception.

Yes, that is a good graphic of the Gallagher design. Some require a third inner wire above the 32" wire for extreme conditions. One note on things not clear the above post. The inner fence is turbowire and the outer fence is 1" turbo tape that is twisted a few times between posts. This is not a high tinsel fence and step in posts can be used for all but perhaps corners. The type of materials (not brand) do come into play with fence design. Deer don't have good depth perception and the thin white inner turbo wire can be seen but not well. The can tell something is there but can't see it clearly. This forms a psychological barrier making them less likely to jump something they clearly have the physical capability to easily jump. The outer tape that is twisted flutters in the breeze. This becomes a visual cue that deer associate with the shock they get from the fence. Baiting the turbo-tape with peanut butter helps train them quickly to avoid the tape.

Having said that, it is cost effective for protecting acreage especially on a temporary basis but I'm not sure I'd want it in a suburban home setting. A 5' solid fence generally fits better into setting better.

Thanks,

Jack
