Firm g3 vs groundbreaker

Moorly

Yearling... With promise
This will be my first post. I just want to say hi and thanks for all of the great reading so far. Does anyone have any input on the differences between the groundbreaker and the firminator. Is there a difference between the cultipackers diameter and weight. The firminator can come with the bigger packer. Is more weight worth the money. Also Is there a difference between the seed mechanics and how it drops out of the box. Has anyone seen both in action.

Thanks

I have the Firminator 6 foot. I am not familiar with the groundbreaker. The seed comes out of the seed cups, never counted but probably 8 cups. You can set the discs to straight for ground opening if your soil is soft enough. You can get aggressive with it if you're looking for that. Had very few issues with it. Hydraulic top link is a MUST if you get it. Nice heavy cultipacker with scraper to clean mud out. Just looked at the Groundbreaker but couldn't tell much. The firminator seed box drops out of cups and can give you a "row" planting effect. but some seed will be top sowed as well. No calibration is needed on the Firminator. Watching the video, the GB seems to be slightly smaller and lighter. I like the weight when I'm discing hardpack for roads or logging decks that need some bust up.

The Groundbreaker is definitely a lot lighter, around 1100 lbs for the 6’ wide model as I recall. You definitely need more tractor / weight for the same size 6’ Firminator.

Weedy ... can you expound more about the need for the hydraulic top link in your experience?

Sorry, was out of town since Thursday! The first time I used it, there was no hydraulics on the top link. Maybe I don't know the tricks, but adjusting the angle by hand of more vs less disc was a phenomenal pain. Some of my soil needed working more that others. Was having to adjust, disc, adjust, etc. With hydraulic, I sit in the cab and tweak the angle as I need it to favor the disc or the cultipacker, or keep them balanced with zero effort and time.

How does it work with seed blends. I have always had those things on my list. But to be honest, I can't get my heard around how a 1 acre clover plot would work as an example? an acre clover plot bag of seed is like 5-10 pounds. It seems like 7-8 pounds of seed wouldn't even show up in those hoppers. They look like they would be better if you had 100+ lbs of seed? Can they work for 1 acre plots? Or are they really only effective for bigger plots?

Then... i wonder how it works if you do a brassica blend that has some peas, grains and then brassicas? A good example is one of my favorite blends is Autumn Buffet by Deer Creek. Big and small seeds? If i recall i plant less than 50 lbs of seed in total. Would the firmanator work? Thanks for your thoughts....

I have a 84” Woods Seeder and five lbs clover seed would be spread pretty thin. Actually, the smaller sizes would be more conducive to smaller acreage. If I am planting a smaller plot, I do it first and then move to the larger plots so I have more seed in the small seed box at once. But that said, no matter how much seed you start with, you eventually get down to a lb or two. I know in my Woods seeder, seed tends to work towards the middle of the seed box and when it gets really low, I will stop and spread it back towards the sides. My large seed box has handled a mixture of lablab, sunflower, ebony pea, milo, and millet with no problem.

I have planted purely brassicas with it and I think I was worried about setting to the tiniest opening, so I over seeded. It does work when you mix large and small seed, but don't have the disc angle aggressive. Some seed will drop into the furrows you open with the disc, but plenty is dropped directly onto the ground and packed, so both large AND small seed will be buried as well as top sowed. Not as efficient as a drill, but works. Just takes a bit more seed because you are effectively broadcasting those that don't get "planted". The other option is to plant the bigger seed with the Firminator, and use an ATV spreader for the small stuff after planting the big stuff. More labor, but gives you a bit more control on the tiny seeds.
