Felco Hand Shears

What model do you guys have? My goodness, just checked their website and they must have 30 different models. How the heck do you choose? A quick search on the forum and I saw a guy using #2 and another guy using #4. I have a Fiskars from Menards, but after this year I'll have around 75 fruit trees in the ground and figured maybe I could do a little better.

I have had my Felco #8s since 1997 (the date is elecrto-pencil marked on them), and I like them.

A couple years ago I purchased a pair of Felco # 7s, the one with has the rotating lower handle, and I do not like them as well. It is more difficult to get it thru my 2" x 4" welded wire cages, and the handle on my pair rotates all the way around, so sometimes I have trougle getting them oriented correctly.

I have a Felco #8 and I am happy with it as well. Did a bit of asking around, look at what the professional nursery people are wearing on their sides and ask them (almost all wear Felco's). I went with the #8 with the thought that it is building on the original models history and has added better ergonomics as far as hand fit and angles. I have older bi-pass shears with straight handles and figured if I was going to get a Felco I wanted something that was different from what I have. For me it was the right buy, I like the fit/feel/angles better than the original designs.

I've been using the Fiscars for a couple years but hate the rotating lock handle, bought the Senkichi ratchet pruners and a folding EverSaw for this spring.

Any other votes? I put this on the back burner, and now a year later I'm ready to go fruit tree pruning again and realized I forgot to buy the new ones.

After two springs of hard pruning the Senkichi ratchet pruners are flat out awesome to use for me. I can easily cut through limbs bigger than my thumb, I cut for hours with zero hand fatigue....they have turned out better than I ever expected.

I have a Felco F2 and really like it. Sean over at Edible Acres posted a video last week describing his favorite pruners - Okatsune 103.

I have a Corona and na el cheapo from Home Depot that are both fine for cutting scions. For trimming a couple of hundred seedlings with maybe ten cuts per seedling every couple of weeks, I like my Fedco # 5. It handles smoothly and effortlessly moves from one cut to another. I have not tried other Fedco's but I will try the # 8 this year just in case. For now though the # 5 fits like a well balanced fly pole. It just floats from one cut to the next.
