Dolgo seedlings/ rootstock

Sandbur: Their apples are nickel to half dollar size crabapples, depending on the tree. I don't have CAR here, but I grew some Dolgo seedlings in pots in another area a couple years ago and maybe 10 - 15% of those got CAR pretty bad.

I haven't noticed any diseases on any of my older Dolgo seedlings trees. And all of them bloom at different times, they all drop at different times, and their fruit has a different color and density depending on the tree.

We just planted and fenced a hundred pack of Dolgo rootstock we bought from Blue Hill. They went in a lot easier than five foot trees, that's for sure. We used them as continuous rows in creating a field crossing funnel. As such planted two in each fence to up the stems per acre look.

Yeah I just did 10...2 were Dolgo's. 6-8 footers. Never again. This year :emoji_sunglasses:

I have some nice applecrabs from trees I have marked as dolgo seedlings. I know some of those came from the local SWCD and I am not sure of the source. I also grew some out. Some are 3/8 inch. Some are nearly as big as Kerr crab.

My experiment with red stemmed dolgo seedlings might end up all smaller crabs like yours. Blue Hill (Ryan) says the dolgo rootstock is supposedly harvested from trees planted in a block. Perhaps there is not much ‘fence jumping’ pollen in there. Of course we don’t know what is hidden in the dolgo genes anyway.

I think Bucksnort has some dolgo seedlings growing from seeds from my place. With all of the crabapples here, I wonder what apples will look like from them.

I've got some Dolgo seedlings growing from seed in a garden here. I planted them a year ago. They are only a few inches tall so far. I just figured it would be nice to have some on hand one day for fall planting where other trees have died during the summer.

My 20 year old Dolgo seedling tree with the most root suckers sure has a lot of them this year. I've been mounding them each of the past few years, but haven't have a chance to check them this spring for own-roots yet. I've been top working (or maybe I should say "bottom working" the branches I can reach) on the big Dolgo seedling trees I have for six days so far, on days it hasn't been raining. Good thing I have so many scions on hand. Thank you to those on this forum that sent them to me.

I have two trees that I think are dolgo seedlings. They are both Bucksnort trees and only scion from him is tacked on them. I only had one take last year. A couple more looked ok, but birds or wind broke them off.

Top working day 7 summary: "How did I get so old so fast?"

I am done and I discarded the leftover scion. That is the only way I quit.

Here's a photo of the Dolgo seedling tree whose root suckers I have been mounding.IMG_3101.JPG

Most of the root suckers I cut off that tree two years ago and planted are thriving. They are surviving better than the B118, M111, and standards I planted that year. I don't water my trees after planting them. They are on their own in my sand once I plant them.

Can someone explain what exactly topworking is?

Do you use root gel when planting?

Here was my first real attempt at top working a couple days ago. Hoping to have each main limb be a different variety by the time I’m done. 1C42E57F-4EF5-4303-B9E6-FA271C783011.jpeg

They are growing quite well actually. There’s a mix of Dolgo, Yellow Dog, Buckman, & Big Dog seeds I believe. Unfortunately there was a labeling mishap and I can no longer tell them apart from one another. I still enjoy the experiment however and will be patiently waiting to see what happens.

Are any showing bronze leaves?

Is Dolgo known for suckering badly? Similar to M7? Or did you “promote” the suckers somehow?

I don’t get much suckering on my dolgo seedlings, but they are seedlings with variability.

So very similar to grafting a tree, except grafting the branches instead of the trunk?

Sandbur: I don't use root gel.
BuckSnort: Just one of my Dolgo seedlings trees grows much in the way of root suckers. Some send out suckers from the base of their trunks, which I also mound.
