Dolgo Crabs

ChadS

A good 3 year old buck
I have some Dolgo Crabs I planted 3 years ago. They seem to be doing great. This year, they have tons of blossoms and I may have some fruit this year.

I put some fertilizer down last week.
Now this week, 6 out of the 10 trees have discoloration on the leaves???
Is this "RUST"?? if so or not is there anything to worry about? Can I spray them?
One more question, I keep getting suckers off of the root stock. Is there something I can do to keep this from happening?

Thanks for any help.

^^^that looks like herbicide drift damage, not rust. Could also be nitrogen burn

My vote is for salt damage from excessive fertilizer use. Notice how browning is only on the leaf tips? My Dad over-fertilized a few of our apple trees last year and they had they same symptoms. A few of the trees died.

What kind of fertilizer did you use? How much?

If it is salt damage, I would take buckets of water and perform flushes on the soil.

I just put 10/10/10 on them. 10ounces each (1-1/2 Cups)

How cold did it get in your area last week?

How cold did it get in your area last week?
It was in the 40's all except one morning it got to 30 for and hour or 2.

Pray its burn back at the tips from frostbite;

Another question(s) is I see you have weed block down, where did you dump it (was it a dry fertilizer or liquid?)? A cup and a half sounds like a lot to me on a little tree.... they dont really have a drip line and it might be too concentrated around the trunk.

Thats my biggest fear with fertilizing young trees... most of the time they just dont need it - water and weed control is far more important.

Its a wait and see game now... we have all been there. Established Woody plants are pretty hardy and can take some abuse and bounce back.

Damn, that sucks. Yes it was a dry fertilizer, I will get out there ASAP and get what can out of there and give them a shot of water.

We fertilize young trees like your about 2 tablespoons , even then 6 plus inches away from trunk prefer trees to grow into fertility , sure looks like fert burn
