Cedar rubbing post

Black Swamp

anyone ever put a cedar rubbing post in their foodplots? You could also add licking branches to them.

I use hardwood but, lots of people use cedar.scrape tree 4.jpg

I have and they haven't touched it.

Yes, about 8-10 threads already on this topic here ... they rub cedar fence posts on my property ...

Cedar post with oak licking branches.

Same here, cedar not touched. I've had better results with poplar rubbing posts.

I think scent has more to do with it than type of wood. If you can get a couple to leave their scent on a post then just about any wood will work.

I did two sumac rubbing post this year, both were completely girdled by bucks. However, despite being 3' deep, bucks worked them so hard the soil opened up in all directions making them very loose in the ground. At that point they stopped rubbing them.

Tried it with Cedar & they didn't get touched. Tried Aspen/Popple and they got shredded.

People that have tried cedar, are you using a tree cut from your place or buying a cedar post from a store?

Mine is cut from a tree on the place.

No cedars at our place. Have some poplar/aspen type stuff though.

I've had good luck with cherry, but they didn't touch box elder. I might try basswood next year because the bucks seem to tear up basswoods even if they are pretty big.

This is something I've also experienced. I have to dig at least 2 to 3 feet with the post hole digger or they get loose. I've got clay,so it may be worse in sandy soil.

I haven't noticed much rubbing action on mine but they tear up the limbs. I'd rather have them using it as a scrape tree than rub tree. I use shingle oaks.

20160914_174345.jpg20160925_155413.jpgThis is one my most active cameras that isn't on a feeder. It's a cedar branch that I put leaning out into my food plot. They had a scrape under it that was the size of a car hood by the end of the season.

I have some on my property with very little use. I don't have cedar trees on my property so maybe that contributes to them not using the posts. I have drilled holes in the posts and added branches but they don't stay in the posts that well.

I don't use cedar, but yes I have planted "scrape" trees in my plots before. I have found that the bigger they are the more attention they seem to get. I don't get much rubbing I get scrapes and lots of scent marking on the branches. I drive a piece of PVC pipe into the ground to form a pocket so it's fairly easy to replace the tree every year. I also use a rope that I transfer every year as well.

This is the biggest buck I have captured near one of my scrape trees. This was a few years ago.....never saw him in person.

Nope, don't use ozonics or $300 dollar carbon suits either. I don't like the way things have changed with hunting and especially hunting shows. I can't stand watching multiple brainwashing infomercials when trying to watch a hunting show---don't watch them anymore actually. OK--I'll get off my soapbox now, sorry for the rant(not really).

^^^ Maybe just me, but I don't equate putting a tree in an open planted plot with the use of technological devices such as ozonics and $300 dollar carbon fiber suits. NOT casting stones at those that use advanced technologies, but for whatever it's worth (or not worth) I haven't ever used ozonics or carbon fiber suits. What I have done is plowed and planted food plots and used scrape trees to help position trophy bucks for close and clean kill shots. Sorry I prefer making as clean / quick kill as possible versus maiming deer (NOT REALLY). Off my soapbox now as well.
