Blooms on 1st leaf crabs

I put these crabs in the ground less than 2 months ago and despite being 3 feet or less tall, they bloomed like crazy. We pulled each flower off, but I’d have to think the tree would abort any fruit at this stage of growth right?

Interestingly a 2nd leaf dolgo on the same rootstock from the same nursery but in a different spot on the farm had zero blooms. Maybe because of my pruning efforts?

It was the first tree in this orchard to go dormant last fall, but also the first to wake up this spring and has put on the best growth so far.

That is interesting. I have had first leaf trees blossom but not second leaf. That tree wants to rock and roll.

Correction I see it was first leaf that blossom and the second leaf did not. That is what I have experienced but never that many blossoms.

I've had crabs try to make fruit from first spring in the ground...I always try and pinch them off first few years so they can put on more wood. Hitting them with a half cup of triple ten around the drip line after that first year usually gets them more in the growing than fruiting mood.

Great pic of your helper too...she knows how to accessorize, love the unicorn cap!

I had a Dolgo fruit the same year I planted it, last year from turkey creek b118. Also had a pear do the same

This was her first trip to the farm and she really enjoyed it. Rewarded her efforts with a happy meal for the drive home, and didn’t get crap from the wife about getting back after dark because I took a kid with me. I think I’m onto something!

I’ll have to start fertilizing. That and painting the trunks with white paint are the next management layers I’m going to add.

Enjoy it now. You have about a 6 year window then she will have a million things to do other than a day at the farm. Time flies
