Austrian winter peas

Hello all. While I’m sure I have planted some in the past I don’t really remember planting any in the last 15-20 years. I’ve read a lot about them and plan on mixing them with some Forage oats. Anybody in middle Georgia or the southeast have an opinion on them? Preferred planting date?

I know they may get eaten to the dirt and that’s fine. That’s when the oats will help but would like to get them planted as early as I can so I can stay out of this tract until I’m ready to hunt.
Thanks

I'm farther north in central PA but I tried the exact mix you're talking about. Austrian winter peas and forage oats. I put down 20 lbs/peas and about 40 lbs oats on about 1/4 acre the first week of August. It's my first time trying peas so I'm pretty interested in seeing how they do. I'm probably going to over seed with wheat and rye in September too.

I'm thinking they're going to get destroyed by the deer but I have a lot of ag around me that I'm hoping takes the pressure off of it. It's looking like it's going to be a good acorn year too, so I'm hopeful they'll still be around when everything starts to brown up.

Our acorns are loaded as well but this tract doesn’t have many. Big peanut field (the south’s alfalfa) next to it but this 100 acres is the bedding. Try to stay out as much as possible but I don’t have access to any of the surrounding land.

Peas and oats are a pretty popular food plot combo. I haven't tried that personally yet but keep us posted! Always enjoy hearing what works for others :emoji_thumbsup:

Me too. I have 3 small plots that I'm trying different combos in each. Peas/oats, clover/chicory/oats, radish/ PTT/ beets. Since I also have small plots I'm looking for something that can last into november/december too. Won't do me much good if everything is gone in september. Also why I plan on over seeding with rye and wheat in september.

I have planted wheat and AWP in sw AR in September. The wheat makes a grazeable presence much quicker than the peas. The peas are eaten to the ground at my place. I dont consider the peas a valuable addition to a wheat planting - at my place.

I assume they’re like a soybean and when bitten close will tap out?

i think most do. They are just a no show in the fall and winter. I will see a scattering of them come spring.

Winter peas and oats plot. It's coming in kind of spotty and weedy. Stupid smart weed, popped up after I sprayed the plot. Wheat and Rye are going in this weekend.

I’m located just south of you in the Haynesville/Elko area. I planted peas last year and a had pretty minimal use of them. From what I’ve read, there are two varieties. One with purple flowers and one with white flowers. I think the white flowers are preferred, but I don’t think there is any way to tell prior to them flowering. I believe mine had white flowers, but still didn’t see much browse. I just ordered this years seed today and did not include Austrian winter peas in my order. They were not the ice cream I hoped they would be. Good luck if you try them!

I’ve got one bag to try. We will see how it goes. My deer have never seemed too picky except where brassicas are concerned. Will never plant those again.
