Any guess on the ID?

No clue. Nowhere near anything that I know is edible.
 
Yes, That's called a pheasant's back. They are very common, like to grow on boxelders. They are edible. We have eaten quite a few. They are ok. I don't know why but my kid loves them. Just don't expect them to compare to a morel, hen, or chanterelles. If you try some pick the smaller ones, they are better for eating.
 
How bout this for crazy? A week ago I had no idea what a pheasant back was (as noted above). Found three today and ate them.

That's the same story I read to figure out what to do with them. I would have had no clue about peeling that skin off without that.
