2021 Scion Exchange

Diesel5610

5 year old buck +
Well it is that time of year again, maybe a week or two early but time for the annual scion exchange thread. Deer season is over and I am thinking about this years habitat projects and planting. I am not going crazy this year with apple trees as I am running out of great planting locations but I am willing to send any scion I have to anyone wanting them. If anyone has All Winter Hangover, Winter Wildlife, 30-06 or Droptine crabs I would be interested in a few scion. If not no problem and I should have the following scion:

Franklin
Wickson
Enterprise
Golden Hornet
Dolgo
Liberty
Chestnut
Goldrush

Not to be a beggar BUT I’m looking for the following and will cover your shipping and throw a few bucks your way if need be:

Kerr
Keepsake
Sweet Sixteen
Transcendent Crab

I’ve got 100 rootstocks coming this Spring and looking to get a few different varieties started

Oaknut - I just sent you a PM!

I’d love to find some cosmic crisp

Oaknut: Here’s what happens on my place with a double trunk apple tree that is grown from seed like that one in your photo and is a late hanger. I cut one of the trunks off. Then I mound sand and woodchips around the stump once the snow has melted. I fence around it for the first year. New shoots come up from the roots around the stump. They grow additional roots of their own in the mound of sand and woodchips after they come up from the mother roots. Once they get about a foot tall +/-, I dig down and nip them off where they originally spurred off from the mother root and then grow them in pots for the summer. Then I plant them in the fall. Personally, I can never get enough clones from a great tree like that.

If anyone wants haralson, I have lots

Does anyone have late dropping pear varieties they will have scions from? I recently gained permission to plant fruit trees and have ordered a mix of 15 crabs, apples, and keifer pears but everyone is sold out of the later dropping pears. I would gladly pay for them! I thought grafting would be a fun project to try with the kids this spring while I wait for next fall to order some more!

These do not all have ideal scion wood, but I should be able to clip off something that will work.

If you have any scions you’d part with from that volunteer tree I’d definitely be interested in a couple!

This is probably a shot in the dark but I’ll throw it out anyway. My buddy just informed me that he was planning to get rootstock from me again this year. I PROMISED my wife I would slow down! He’s looking for 25-30 (larger sized trees like Antonovka, B118, or M111).
1. Is there anyone in northern / NW Wisconsin with an order coming that either has extra or could add a bundle of 50?
2. Anyone have suggestions for smaller amounts of rootstock at a somewhat decent price?

Cummins nursery is $3.45 ea for 25 plus shipping. Might be places that sell cheaper?
Or he can bite the bullet from Copenhaven Farms and buy 100 of the B118 for $181 shipped to your doorstep.... that’s what I did.

Check out your county's soil conservation district to see if they have anything that you could use as rootstock. I've ordered dolgo crabapple seedlings for this spring, they were charging $30 per bundle of 25. I'll either graft to them or grow them as is depending on what they look like when I get them.

Fedco still had some b118's the last time I looked.

Willamette Nursery WA. would likely do a small 50 count bundle order. And... bonus they have Russian rootstock available but not much left for B118. Either way I would get an order in soon. You can stick the extra RS in the ground and graft them next year.
