2018 Scion exchange!

Merle Hawggard

5 year old buck +
There is nothing like Richard Fayhey's list coming in the mail! It's stirs the imagination and quickens the blood.
Anyone have wants, plans, etc?
I was only going to graft 10, then 15, and now I'm feeling 20.

I'll see you at the next AGA (apple grafters anonymous) meeting. :emoji_laughing::emoji_laughing::emoji_laughing:
I've spent way too many hours looking at Richard's listing........and Derek Mills (Hocking Hills Orchard) listing...........and Big Horse Creek Farm listing...........and Maple Valley Orchard listing..............and Masonville Orchard listing............. and the GRIN website.
There's always just that one more variety that I have to try. :emoji_face_palm:
I only have 13 new varieties of scion wood ordered this year...........but I am waiting for you and Chuck to get back to me:emoji_open_mouth::emoji_wink:

I am really trying to hold back as I only have one spot prepped for a single apple tree planting. I am thinking of just topworking 30 year old flowering crabs with two seedlings that I like.

I sent you a pm new years eve with most of the varieties we added this year. I still need to check mine here at the house though.
I've been mulling over the ones you have too lol!
I'm looking for,
Smokey Mnt Limbertwig, Stellar and Shannon Pippin.
I actually have Shannon, but it's such a poor grower I wanted to try it on a new rootstock.

I'm trying to hold back too. Only grafting 50 rootstocks this year instead of 100. :)

For those thinking about requesting scionwood from the USDA GRIN, better get your order in soon. The cutoff date listed for apples is Jan 10 and Feb 1 for pears.

Would someone be able to point me toward a crash course on using the USDA GRIN site? Say I wanted a Liberty scion, do I click budwood plant? Is this a free service?

If you want real common varieties like Liberty, put a list together and ask here. Someone probably will have it and would be willing to send it to you in exchange for postage.

For harder to find varieties, the USDA will send you a couple sticks of scionwood for up to 25 varieties. Tell them you plan to do some research, topic something like "hardiness and wildlife habitat value in zone ___ in the state of ____" and that you'll publish the result here. Then they'll cut and ship scionwood to you. That couple sticks could graft 6 to 10 rootstocks.

It would be best to register a user account first - https://npgsweb.ars-grin.gov/gringlobal/useracct.aspx. Here you can enter the info abour your "research"

You can start searching from here - https://www.ars-grin.gov/ or here - https://npgsweb.ars-grin.gov/gringlobal/search.aspx - I usually type in malus or pyrus plus the common name. "malus liberty" gets you 3 items, all apples while just "liberty" gives you 74 results from all kinds of plants.

Here is what you get back searching for "malus liberty" https://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgsold/swish/accboth?query=liberty+malus&submit=Search!&sort=swishrank&si=0&.cgifields=si&.cgifields=reverse

Here is the page for the Liberty apple. https://npgsweb.ars-grin.gov/gringlobal/accessiondetail.aspx?1005016 . Above the photo of the apple is the box to add to your favorites or to your order (if available to order).

Add things to your order, open your cart and go through the checkout process.

So on the form it says 'organization' under my name. What do us tree addicts put in there?
How do I pay for shipping or any fees? I imagine there is some charge at some point?

Thanks btw, never knew this grin thing existed. Seems like a win.

For organization, name it after your farm or property or camp or or town or county or whatever. My organization is simply called "Project W" after my columnar apple thread on this forum.

No charge for shipping. Free. Your part of the bargain is to report back to us on your research results. When did it drop, does it have disease problems, did the deer eat them?

Hey Dan

I can get you Keener Seedling, Lowry, Swiss limbertwig and I think Ruby Limbertwig and Red Rebel ( I'll have to double check those)
I could use a stick of Albermarle Pippin, Baldwin, and Morgan Sweet.

Hey CAS

I can send you some Limbertwigs. Red Royal, Meyers Royal and Swiss.

Send me a pm with this info and address and I’ll respond in kind. Thanks

chickenlitte, thanks for that thorough tutorial. Your links made it really simple. I signed up and made a small order. Just beat the deadline. I checked the "educational" box rather than research, and explained how grafting and orchards might make a nice cub scouts activity sometime. We'll see. If anyone here will have Violi's Hanging, All Winter Hangover, & Winter Wildlife, I'd be interested in those accessions (learned that word on GRIN). I don't have much to offer other than some kieffer, maybe a stick or 2 of Enterprise, Goldrush, Florina, or cash.

Mortenson - I have all 3, Violi's, AWH, and Winter Wildlife crabs. I won't be up to the camp to prune until late February at the earliest, and more likely in March. If you aren't in a rush to graft, I can see what's available for scion then. I've mailed scion to others on here before, it's no problem. You can send me a PM of your mailing address if you'd like.

Geez that's really nice, Bowsnbucks! If it works out I'd gladly accept it. I assume you think those are three good ones. Unless I missed them, I didn't see them on Grin. I know you're one of the guys who really appreciates the advantages of crabs. I better get in touch with Tino and order up a few more roots. Thanks again.

I will have some on a very limited basis;

30-06 Crab-
DropTine Crab- both the crabs are pretty much spoken for now.

Sheepnose
Gray Ghost
Baldwin
Northern Spy
Spitzenburg Esopus
NY-414-1
Golden Russet
Enterprise
Gala
Fuji
Cortland
Johny-Mac

I don't need anything...just paying it forward this year.

I will also have a few scions of Johnny Appleseed.
