What to do with an oak savannah?

We have a couple sections of woods on the new farm that have had cattle throughout for the past 40 years or more. I am assuming at one point these areas were a mixed forest that was eventually clear cut except the hundreds of white, red, and black oaks that remain. There is almost zero...

Anyone have recommendations for a heated vest, jacket, or sweatshirt?

Preferably something with a durable outerwear that you can wear as an exterior or thin enough to wear under some other outerwear layer.

Food plot location strategy poll - numerous kill plots (<0.25 ac) or larger feeder plots (>1.0 ac) throughout property

Assuming you have similar topography and cover throughout the property, would you rather have smaller kill plots that are scattered throughout the property with varying quality levels of access, or larger feeder plots that are fewer but more centrally located with easier/moderate quality access...

What do you use to determine who hunts where on your property?

I don't think I've seen this talked about on here yet, but I'm curious what others are doing when they have guests come to hunt on their property. How do you determine who gets to hunt where?

    Footage from the stand

Talked about doing this in the Live from the stand thread. This will be a place for people to post video clips from their hunts. To get things started, here are a few clips from my first couple of hunts on the new farm in Northern Missouri: I have had a few encounters with the bigger of the...

Standing dead oak trees - worth it for firewood?

On the new farm, we have a number of old dead oak trees that have been dead for a number of years. I am assuming they were killed by cattle and most of the bark has fallen off. We burn some wood for a heat source so these are obviously appealing. I have heard from some that really dead and dry...

Intermediate wheatgrass as a potential food plot?

https://blog-crop-news.extension.umn.edu/2022/10/intermediate-wheatgrass-new-perennial.html Just wondering if anyone here has read or thought about using this as a potential food plot/revenue source? I have been reading up on it after seeing some plots of 'Clearwater' Kernza (which is the...

This is definitely going to be an interesting year for acorns

This is from a bur oak in my gravel bed in MN. It started aborting the acorns a few weeks ago and most are done dropping now. Most are about the size of a pea or a dime. I have no idea how palatable these will be, but for what its worth, I haven't seen a squirrel or chipmunk touch them yet. I...

Are Easterly winds becoming more common?

For the last three years or so, we have been noticing more East winds at various times throughout the year. What got us thinking about this is that we have been looking at weather forecasts during the hunting season and have been seeing several days in a row with east winds. Nearly all of our...

    Way too early summer scouting

I normally don't start "scouting" quite this early. One of my nephews is starting to get into hunting and was up for going so we decided to check out the new farm I just bought in March as well as our neighbor's bean field next to the home farm. For the new farm, I had no idea what to expect. We...

Looking for some input on custom summer/fall release process

Situation: This is in northern MO. Have a drill for May planting, but may not have one for the fall planting. We do not own or have access to a crimper or cultipacker. Fields are currently planted with a decent stand of cereal rye. Soils are a medium textured silt loam with 4% OM. Deer density...

Need help with identifying this flowering tree

New blank canvas farm tour in Northern MO

This will be a farm tour thread for a new farm I just purchased with my brother. This is in Northern MO. It is 187 acres, with 40 in current tillable for cash rent, another 15 soon to be tillable, around 50 acres of timber, with the rest in pasture. We have have another brother who had bought...

Found an older dead head on the new farm.

I think it has been dead around 4 years. Probably EHD or hit by a car in velvet. All of the burs around the base were still sharp and hadn't been rubbed yet. It's never ideal to find a dead head but encouraging for the genetics and age class of bucks in the area.

Full cash rent or leave standing crops?

We have a young local farmer who will likely be putting in crops on our ag ground. I'm going to be meeting with him soon to discuss crapping arrangements. Historically we have just had the farmer pay us market rental rates. I've seen some on here mention that they have an agreement with the...

    Video of cell camera comparison

This guy kind of made a name for himself for doing a lot of DIY hunting equipment projects and for doing trail camera evaluations. Here he is comparing several of the most common cell cameras out there on the market. He is a relatively smaller YouTuber and figured some of you may not have heard...

    The late November lull

What is everyone seeing for in-person or on camera buck sightings lately? It's been almost a ghost town on a couple of our farms in northern Missouri. Looking back at cameras from the last few years, this has been the pattern, but never to this extreme. I'm assuming (mature) bucks are just out...

Preferred or alternative weed mat type for caged and/or tubed trees

I saw from a similar thread some comments on preferred weed mat source. I know I have also read some comments periodically on using repurposed materials for weed mats. I believe one suggestion was for cardboard. I am wondering about the viability of cardboard or maybe even brown paper bags...

    Rut activity

On some public land in MN I saw a buck two nights ago locked down with a doe. He was fighting off a few other smaller bucks and keeping her corralled. At our MO farm, we have been getting very few photos of bucks the last few nights. There are definitely some does getting bred. Are you all...

Interesting discussion with Don Higgins on the Land Podcast

https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy80OWUzMGYxNC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw/episode/OTQ2ZmUwN2UtM2QyYS0xMWVkLTkxM2MtZDcyYThjMjBlZWQ0?ep=14 I thought it was interesting that Higgins is now recommending people to use 8 ft fences as a way to protect against bad neighbors. I'm not sure...
