    Fruit trees for dove hunting

Ok so the title is misleading, I’m not feeding doves fruit, I’m looking to feed myself while dove hunting. I just bought a small property that I’ll put a cabin on, should have a few acres of sunflowers for the doves, and half an acre of fruit trees for me. I’ll love to pick an apple on the way...

    Holes in my apple tree

This is a first for me. I think this Enterprise on M111 will be on its 6th leaf this spring. Had a great crop last year. Noticed this in the bark this winter. What is it and what should I do? I assumed it was buggy, sprayed with mineral oil and a bit of permethrin. Sent from my iPhone...

Planting trees does not improve deer hunting

I don’t have a good buck on my private property so I was out scouting public yesterday. My expectations are always low, but I found two bedding areas with fresh sign and miraculously no hunter sign. I began strategizing how to attack these areas in the coming months and years and began to wish I...

    Tree with alternate leaves

I came across a patch of small trees together, and then I found what I believe to be the parent tree. This is on the edge of the woods and gets a lot of sunlight. No discernible fruit. I have attempted to include pictures of the bark of the parent tree as well as the biggest of the small...

Early season hunt for a giant

October 5th rolled around with a NE wind on the tail end of a cool front. My brother had hit his target buck on a different farm the evening before, so I knew the timing was right. I had one and only one deer on my mind that evening, yes because he was a monster, but mostly because there was...

    Plant in CRP

Out scouting some public today, this plant with its purple-black pods caught my eye. Inside were what appeared to be small seeds that were a bit sticky. What do you think? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Name this shrub

This has been on the field edge and I’ve resisted cutting or spraying as I’m not sure what it was. Today I looked it over and put it through the plantnet app and was intrigued. What do you all think? It was about 9-10 feet tall. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Blooms on 1st leaf crabs

I put these crabs in the ground less than 2 months ago and despite being 3 feet or less tall, they bloomed like crazy. We pulled each flower off, but I’d have to think the tree would abort any fruit at this stage of growth right? Kerr MM111 (next to the obnoxious looking kid) Dolgo MM111...

    Vine with orange berries

So I was out 'smornin' spreading some roundup to carve out a kill plot when orange caught my eye. I see a vine with brightly colored berries climbing a red oak. My initial reaction was to KILL KILL KILL with extreme prejudice because rarely do I read about vines that are beneficial. I resisted...

    Tell me about Sassafras

I have questions about Sassafras. What do you all do with it? It seems like I get a lot of it along field edges and regrowth areas, and initially it makes everything quite thick and "brushy". But the "greenbrush" does eventually grow into what I feel are useless trees and everything thins out...

    Getting ready

I've got the morning free, don't have to be at work until 1300 tomorrow. My trees from TWG have arrived and are leafed out and need to get in the ground. Its also supposed to rain tomorrow afternoon. So all signs point to me using the morning as well as using my time effectively. I can't be late...

    Shrub ID

Also came across this shrub. Will keep an eye on it and adds pictures as it leafs out. Anyone have a guess as to what this is based on the looks? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    What tree is this

I've been doing just a little TSI, mostly removing junk maples and releasing oaks and I ran into a small cluster of this tree. Not sure what it was so didn't want to remove it in case it was something useful. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Mushroom ball

I was walking in the woods and saw 3 of these huge fungi balls. They were almost the size of a volleyball (notice the black walnut just below for size reference.). What in the heck were these things!? Kinda rolled and stayed together when I kicked it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Cages for norways

I've tried planting Norway Spruce unprotected in order to improve cover and they get destroyed by deer. What circumference cages do you normally make for norways? What about shrubs like dogwoods or buttonbush or elderberry? How long do you normally leave them on? Lumite needs to be removed...

    Black spots

I believe this is a pear tree that doesn't look well. There are these black spots over the leaves and new growth and some of the edges look almost singed. Another pear nearby doesn't look as bad but has similar discoloration. Whats going on? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Tree id

Newbie to tree ID. Wondering what tree this is and if there is any value to wildlife. There are some small oaks around, but I'd like to know what I'm cutting down first before going nuts this winter. Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Crabapples, pears and apples

I have a couple of questions for the forum. I'm just getting into fruit trees at my own farm; I started at my in-laws' with apples that I loved to eat the most: pink lady. Man I love those things. Yes there are some deer around that place, but they were more for me to eat. After they were in...
