Anyone have luck or any issues with just weedwhacking down for thatch over brassica instead of any form of tilling?

Looks like a lot of my corn is turning a red color. I understand how if not enough kernels, that its from not being able to use up the sugars. Would that be normal at this stage of growth though, or is this a sign of something else? Most of my corn is about knee high right now, so none of it...

I've got the Kubota 1120 and looking to get a winch for it. Any recommendations? I found mount that will go into the front or back hitch receiver so the winch could be moved to either end. Any negatives with those? Any other reco's or thoughts? Never purchased one before.
