    Pear tree help

The other nice thing about trimming back to 1 trunk is that all of the energy from the root system will go into a single place instead of multiple.

Bill Winke supports our addiction - keep on planting!

I love watching his videos. Give him a ton of credit for giving up a whitetail paradise and starting over from scratch to be closer to family. I would definitely be doing some top working on those wild trees as rootstock!

The video he posted is darn impressive! I only wish my 2 year old trees looked that good…

Landscape fabric for new fruit trees?

Things you can do to reduce grass competition will definitely help, especially if you’re only planting a small number of trees. I had good intentions when I started but quickly realized that I grafted too many trees and planting & caging take way more time than you think. I had all I could do...

Fruit trees/nut trees/shrubs for deer that love wet soil

I’ve been working on getting ROD going in my wet area of the property but it’s been slow between summer drought and fighting reed canary grass. The ones I did get growing I just used some landscape staples on suckers to get them to spread faster. I planted some silky along the edge this fall...

    Anyone else fall planting apples?

I’ve been doing it for several years now with very good results. Just planted a couple weeks ago. I was nervous the first year because of conflicting info, especially for colder climates but it’s been working for me. Spring planting just doesn’t work with my job. Fall planting can conflict with...

    Crabapple timeline

Another success day planting apple trees in the fall. @sandbur - I had to take a picture of this Big Dog for you. I’m hoping it does well.

    Crabapple timeline

We had zero rain for over a month after I seeded rye. So I put more down since the turkeys had been through. After 3 inches it is finally starting to look decent. This is an area I am slowly trying to transition to a small 1/4 acre food plot. Needs some lime and a good discing to level the ground.

    Cider Trees and Applesauce info

Correct, sweet cider. Unfortunately I don’t have the freezer space to just store it that way, it would’ve been a lot faster. We brought the cider up to a boil and then put them in a water bath for 10 minutes. Different internet sites had other suggestions but this was the most common.

    Cider Trees and Applesauce info

I spent the entire day making cider. Not sure on varieties, apples were from friends. Either way, it tastes great.

    Tree buyer's Anonymous

In addition to trees, I think I may have an apple problem. A friend had a ridiculous crop this year and asked if I wanted some. Well I’m up to 5-6 totes at this point. My wife keeps saying “what the hell are you going to do with all those?” The dehydrator is running constantly. A friend is going...

    2023 Drought vs. Apple Rootstocks

My trees on B118 did better than expected this summer in Central WI. Only lost 3 overall which was a pleasant surprise considering the extremely dry conditions. Was even able to pick some apples for eating. I did graft some new trees on M-7 and that was a disaster. Many died in the month of...

    Straightening mature trees

Discovered one of the oldest apple trees on the property badly tipped this weekend. My dad and I used the winch on UTV and some old fire hose to straighten it back out. Time will tell, either way, it was worth taking the chance to extend things instead of starting over. Rootstock unknown.

    Fruit trees for Spring 2023

It’s very interesting to me that the month of June has been one of my greatest challenges between grafting & planting over the past few years in WI. The lawns are brown again and no rain in the forecast. Between drought, insects, disease, voles, rabbits, deer, etc etc it’s amazing we can even...

    Chestnut crab, liberty, enterprise, winecrisp?

I bought some cheap Dolgo seedlings after reading through some of Sandbur’s info. Turned out they were very small fruits. While they have a place, it wasn’t what I was looking for so I grafted them over to Kerr and some other late hanging varieties. It was worth the experiment to me and the...

    Fruit trees for Spring 2023

You are correct, I use sawdust in the spring to get them waking up and doing their thing. When it’s time to plant they pull out nice and easy with no root disturbance.

    Fruit trees for Spring 2023

That’s awesome!! Dave had sent me scionwood from 2 trees a few years ago, no name or anything, but ones he was excited about. I just named them NY Wild 1 & 2. Unfortunately that was the year we had terrible drought and neither made it. Hopefully what he sent me is now in your orchard for you to...

    Fruit trees for Spring 2023

Topgrafted some Dolgo seedlings with small fruit and unknown bird-sized crabs over to true Dolgo, Kerr, and a few others that came from @Oaknut through trades (much appreciated!). It was a bit early but I had to make it work into my busy spring schedule.

    Fruit trees for Spring 2023

My restrictions were 6 week after hernia surgery. Not saying I couldn’t have planted some trees before then but I followed them closely because I didn’t want to go through it again! Might be worth taking a snow shovel out before surgery or finding a friend to help with planting after surgery.
