Spring planted oats and clover ?

Oats are a great nurse crop. If you are planting early, I would also consider barley. Buckwheat needs 60 degree soil temperature for best germination. As an aside, oats as nurse crop for buckwheat did well planted late May. I am in Northern lower peninsula in Michigan. I do not use...

    Yellow Sweet Blossom Clover

Various heights, max was 4-5'. The field was a landing for some logging this year. So, I don't what to expect from regrowth. I would like the sweet clover and vetch to reseed, so we shall see.

    Yellow Sweet Blossom Clover

Yellow blossom is more visible in one, vetch is not too visible in the other, maybe shading the picture more. Sweet clover stood all season and the vetch did climb it.

Drill, Throw, Buckwheat to Brassicas and Grains

South Central Iowa, All old CRP Fields Did a Soil Test and having 2 tons of lime per acre added right now. I know it will not be perfect this spring, but had to get it down sometime. This is a great time to lime. Snow and Spring rain will dissolve pelletized lime. That will give time for the...

    killing wheat

Yes sir. Seed the buckwheat and mow the wheat after it sets seed. Mulch, roots and free seed. Too much use of chemicals. Why spray when you can use the natural life cycle for more biomass and soil microbe feeding? Onward.

    liming timing?

Can I talk you out of spraying herbicides? Do not underestimate your "thick cover of rye". When you get the results of the soil test, consider high calcium or high magnesium lime. I made that mistake. I needed more calcium than magnesium. Use gypsum for calcium if your pH is Ok.

    Seeding brassicas into standing rye

I am in Lewiston, Michigan. One field grew sweet fern, blueberries and something that looked like brillo pads and never grew. i would not attempt to grow brassicas at this time. They do not develop associations with mycorrhizal fungi. I would recommend frost seeding annual clovers (balansa)...

    liming timing?

I would lime now. The snow, rain, moisture will help with the coating. I would suggest taking soil tests at the same time of year. I do not know what your plans for the field are but frost seeding now can work. I am not a spray guy as I would rather help the micro-organisms, Read the link...

    spring planted winter rye?

WHich book? Also, I will take any help on crops to grow for root mass and surface residue. I am probably biased against the supposed dense root system of rye grass as I do not use herbicides and fear a permanent invasion.

Roll and Mow cause Mullein like a Hydra

Do not know what clover you planted, but you may have plenty of nitrogen by next year if you want to plant some brassicas.

Roll and Mow cause Mullein like a Hydra

I have had some mullein plants. It is a biennial. Fortunately, have not experienced the spread, regrowth like in the .pdf. If you mow your clover, I do not think that you will have a problem with an infestation, but that is based on my experience. Good luck...

    The Throw n’ Mow Method

I have questions. First, I do not see much of the cut rye. Did you rake it off of the plot? Were there weeds in the rye? Buckwheat is looking good.
