Prescribed Burns - how to get started?

That might work for a portion of the property. A good bit of the ground in question is fairly thick with more desirable stems but there is a lot of autumn olive mixed in. May need more of a scalpel approach in most areas. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Prescribed Burns - how to get started?

My main purpose for considering this tool is for knocking back invasive species like autumn olive, bush honeysuckle, and multi flora rose. I’d rather not cut and pile it up as that will be a ton of work, but I’m not opposed to doing that work if that’s the best option. Would love to take a...

Prescribed Burns - how to get started?

I spoke with a woman from the NRCS office in the county where my land is located. She acknowledged that prescribed burning is one of the tools promoted by the NRCS as a whole but noted that a) none of their employees in NY are trained in that area and b) the DEC will not approve burn plans for...

Prescribed Burns - how to get started?

There's no doubt in my mind that I could figure out how to do a prescribed fire safely with all of the resources that are available on that topic. What I'm less sure of is how to go about doing this in a legal manner. I know that the NYS DEC conducts some prescribed burns every year in various...

Prescribed Burns - how to get started?

Have you done any prescribed burning? Have you had a fire get away from you?

Prescribed Burns - how to get started?

Yes, it is legal. But you have to be "certified" to be able to conduct prescribed burns. The process and qualifications, as far as I can tell, are very subjective.

Prescribed Burns - how to get started?

Hello, I am very interested in using prescribed fire for helping to manage small sections of my property in upstate NY. Sawtooth oak acorn source?

I purchased the DCO acorns through Blitz, so I'm glad I got that part right at least :) Any recommendations on where to get fast growing burr oak acorns? I like your steady food supply philsophy and am hoping to implement something similar on my ground.

    Sawtooth oak acorn source?

Well, I just bought some DCO acorns. Would still like to add sawtooth and chestnuts as well. I know there used to be a thread on the old forum for acorn / chestnut / scion / seed swapping. Is there anything like that here?

    Sawtooth oak acorn source?

Thanks Jack, I had very limited success in getting DCOs to germinate in previous attempts and I'm also not sure that my soil is well suited for them (I think they like well drained soil). Thank you for the suggestion! Anthony
