Help me choose - pruning advice

I have an apple that's been in the ground now for ~3 years. - a couple pictures below show a double leader from different angles- and I'm not sure exactly what cuts to make. Do I let the double leader ride? Maybe top cut it? Do I take the stem that's at an angle and leave a single central...

    Green Goblin

Anybody else have issues with Moultrie cell cams suddenly presenting green tinted pictures? This has happened routinely to me this season, mainly with the Delta model but also with some of the older 7000 series. It's so bad, yoiu can't distinguish deer from background. The batteries are fine...

    Gypsy Moths

It's no surprise I guess given the number of egg masses that appeared last fall and the hordes of dead moths that we needed to clean out of the tower blinds, but this year is shaping up to be a real winner. My wife and I noticed that nearly all of our small hardwood and fruit trees have small...

    Cool sighting

I don't know whether this is a good omen or not. As I was finishing woods work yesterday, setting a chair into a platform blind, I caught a glimpse of bone out the window. I turned to see a really nice buck make his way through an open goldenrod field 25 yards away and into some pines. My fat...

Could news outlets become any more obviously biased?

It doesn't matter if they lean right or left. Most of the news being reported today is opinion in the guise of facts. The headlines read. "So and so said, so and so slams, so and so raises doubts, so and so dismisses, so and so praises..." and on and on ad nauseam. You just find somebody whose...

Landscape fabric in a heat wave

I haven't had a chance to cover the black landscape cloth around the trees we put in this Spring with gravel yet, and I'm concerned that the heat and sun this week could cause excessive soil heating and root damage. Does anyone have thoughts on whether this is a valid fear? I plan to have a load...

    Crooked planting

I had some help yesterday planting 30 fruit trees from Cummins - with appropriate social distancing, of course - and some of the trees were...less than straight, when all was said and done. So, how important is it to have the grafted top section pointing straight up? I've planted a bunch of...

    U-post spacing

I'm looking to install some deer fence around several small areas where I'm trying to introduce conifers and shrubs. The shorter tubes I've used for shrubs simply show the deer where the buffet table is located. I purchased the lighter black mesh fencing from Deerbusters, and I'm looking for...

dormant oil on full size wild apples

As stated, I'm looking to begin a simple spraying regiment for the full size trees that I've been reclaiming on the land we purchased five years ago. So far as I can tell, the minimum plan should include dormant oil, then Captan/Imidan at the specified times. My question is application rate, and...

    Pear issue: what is this?

I have 18 pear seedlings from a tree that drops into December, with the hope that the progeny are also late dropping. Unfortunately, the bottom-most leaves are turning black and the newly emerged leaves are curling. Two different issues? One related issue? I'm open to ideas. FYI, they are in...

    Wrapping fruit trees in winter

My question is whether I need to use a white spiral wrap on my apple trees to prevent sunscald when they're already double wrapped in aluminum window screen to prevent rodent damage. Thanks!

    Plant ID help

Buddy of mine sent me some photos of what looks to be an invasive, but you can see how it's being heavily browsed by the deer in the third photo. Also, there's a picture of a small shrub with red berries. I have my own idea as to what these are, but I'd like to get some other opinions?

To water or not to water?

After one of the most waterlogged summers I can remember, I planted all of the trees and shrubs that I'd grown in 1 gallon RM pots this year (~150 total, oak, chestnut, hazelnut, crabapple) toward the beginning of September. And as many of you have experienced, planting ensures a lack of rain...

    First year Dolgo produces

I left a couple of fruit on the Cummins Dolgo we planted this spring, just to have a taste--even though I know I should have pinched off the buds. Yesterday my wife and I shared our first one, and man was it good! I can see that we're going to have more of them going in the ground next Spring.

    Releasable Cable Ties

I can't remember where I bought a bag of 1000 releasable cable ties last year, but I need more...any advice on the best place to get them and what size to buy? I guess that them being releasable isn't a big priority, since the tubes will stay on until they split. I seem to recall that 10", 50 lb...

An X-mas surprise--what to do with them?

A buddy of mine who comes over from Boston to hunt with me near L. Ontario in NY sent me some 5-6' bare root Norway Spruce as an X-mas gift. I have no clue what to do with them. The ground isn't frozen yet, but it's coming fast, and I've never stored bare root anything over the winter before...

    Zombie fox-chicken caught on trailcam

I have no clue what this is, but it certainly raised some eyebrows at my house. The two pictures were taken ~30s apart, so obviously it's walking down the trail and not some owl or whatnot swooping down on a mouse. Freaky stuff.
