One day every three years my place looks like y’all’s!

Don't fear it, embrace it. I did well over 100 miles on a snowmobile the last two days with 18" of snow on the ground, below zero air temp and -30 wind chills.

    2023 deer season regrets…

Start measuring deer by number of points instead of inches. It becomes a fun challenge to target some of the bucks with odd numbers of points. I doubt that even many of us can check all the boxes for numbers 1-10.

    2023 deer season regrets…

I picked the right day but wrong stand. Target buck walked right past my food plot stand while I was in the woods about 100 yards away. Everybody says don't hunt food in the morning....blah blah blah 😁

    Season Summaries

Way less than 1 deer per hour of hunting for me. I didn't keep a log this year but seeing zero deer on a sit is not uncommon at all. Seeing a single buck or group of 2-3 doe is typically a good sit.

Cell Cam Data Harvesting: Legit concern or not?

Some of these terms seem to support this scenario. Hunter shoots world record animal and the money train starts rolling. Hunter shares trail cam photos of said animal and including the camera manufacturer name or identifier. Manufacturer throws the flag and wants their cut of the cash flow.

Cell Cam Data Harvesting: Legit concern or not?

Anyone who is breaking game laws and using cameras, especially cloud storage based cell cams, is potentially providing evidence of their actions. Cameras and cards "could" be collected and searched. Court orders "could" be written for data (photos/videos) and served upon your cell camera...

    Broadheads

Slick tricks for me also. Using them on aluminum bolts with high success.

    Extended hunt

I've never found a shed so maybe this is the year! Usually the bucks are long gone by now other than a pass through.

    Extended hunt

On the contrary I typically don't have a whole lot of deer on my place once winter settles in. This year I'm still seeing plenty. Once the snow comes I'm sure that will change.

Question for guys hunting larger antlered deer…

The two top bucks I had consistent pictures of this season have survived. Never saw them in person. Whether their racks gain anything next year remains to be seen but regardless they are shooters for us.

Are the glory days of deer hunting coming to a close?

Some of my non-hunting friends have been sending me links to "zombie deer" articles for years. I never open them.

MN bills introduced to allow crossbows during archery season.

God forbid anybody with too many deer on their property invite someone that wants/needs venison step foot on their paradise to harvest one.

Latest MSU Deer Lab Study on Buck Movement

I find these types of studies super interesting but there are so many factors in play that make each micro location different from each other. We run multiple cameras year round on two parcels less than 1 mile center to center from each other and we typically never see a mature buck frequenting...

Time to lighten up - Laughter is good medicine Part II

I umped boys baseball and it was fine for the most part. One day they were short an ump for girls softball so I got roped in. Holy crap, without a doubt the girls softball coaches were the worst! Never did that again.

    Pennsylvania Sedge dilemma

They destroyed great deer habitat on the federal lands by me to create large oak savannas which are not great deer habitat, way too open. On the flip side any small meadow type openings with Pennsylvania sedge covering the ground are typically loaded with beds.

What do you make of this observation?

You say you have "decent bedding", are there better and larger bedding areas nearby? What kind of activity does the area see? I've been on ground where there is so much human daytime activity that the deer just don't move until after sunset yet they work their way back to their beds during...

Thoughts on culling bucks with poor genetic potential.

This conversation was about culling bucks not youth seasons until your ignorant blanket statement that kids should not be allowed to shoot bucks.

Thoughts on culling bucks with poor genetic potential.

I really hope you guys are joking. "Hey kids come learn to hunt, you can shoot the doe especially if they are really small, but only the adult men get to shoot the ones with antlers"

Thoughts on culling bucks with poor genetic potential.

Personally most times someone posts a pic of a buck and says with certainty that he is 3.5 (with or without potential) I don't buy it. IMO without previous year(s) history it's really just a guess.

Are the glory days of deer hunting coming to a close?

Hahaha. Thanks. I'm just laughing inside at the posts implying that people from Chicago don't go to deer camp once or twice a year and shoot the first buck they see and that hunting giant bucks over bait is like shooting fish in a barrel. I don't consider myself the typical dude from Chicago lol.
