Any Frankentrees out there?

I’ve done the same. These were grafted last year and droptine, wickson and liberty all have flowers this year. I plan on leaving an apple or 2 on each just to see how they do, if they get too big and appear to be stressing the graft I will remove them. Im not out much if the graft fails.

Love this thread as it gives me hope for this that I did this with some of my keiffer pears this year as well as some clearance box store pears I bought 14 years ago that haven't produced much yet. Looking forward to how they turn out.

Noticed the Chestnut crab and EMS crab grafts from last yr are leafing out. The Harrison cider put on last week are still taking a nap. Things have really changed here in a week. Several recent days of temps reaching into the 80s after a lot of cloudy and 50s with temps down to freezing at the end of April and start into May. Hopefully this means that a late frost is less likely.

So after you graft onto a tree, how long before you will get apples? A couple years?

14 years ago? Wow that's a long time! I'm curious if they were flowering pears or actually Kieffers?

I probably didn't explain that very welll.

The keiffers are doing fine producing fruit, it was the box store pear, I forget the fruiting variety but it has produced a few pears over the years but never more than a dozen. It has bloomed out well each year. I think it is a pollinator thing. I put three variety on it this spring. I have several of those grafted leafing out, hopefully they will take hold and one of them can pollinate it.

I’ve had similar experience with big box store pears the ones I have that are like that are clearly on a mystery dwarfing rootstock. They produce very little fruit for their age so I suspect the issue is the dwarfing rootstock mine are on and have been very very slow to produce anything.

This tree is as big as my Kieffers are.

Are you fertilizing them?
I fertilized them for 4 years after the year I planted them and then I started only putting fertilizer around them every 2 or 3 years(if I remember to in the spring). Growth has been great on all my trees and fruit production has been good on all but the box store trees. This year's fruit production is looking incredible,(apple and pear) knock, knock on wood.

3 of 8 varieties blooming on mine. All were grafted in the spring of 2020.
