Ouch, high fence deer that got loose

I don't have enough fingers & toes to count that one

It's too bad people are giving him crap over it and he didn't know.Any of us would be going crazy if that showed up on cam.Hopefully he gets his tag back and keeps antlers. Wonder if game farm reported to USDA that it got loose?

Hold out some sugar cubes in one hand and a 45 in the other. Whistle and say, "here boy.....here boy...." He will be in your freezer soon.

I disagree. A 130” is a giant in my neck of the woods. 150” + is a deer of a lifetime. I’d be pissed if a local deer zoo let one of their pets escape.

People shouldn’t be rude but I would not be excited if that farm animal showed up on my camera.

What a roller coaster ride for the kid that shot it.
It shouldn't count against his license with it being pen raised. Two conflicting emotions come to mind for me right off the bat; Did it spread disease to the local wild herd? On the other hand, might have been kind of cool genetically if it would have been able to breed a few does before being shot.

For the record I am 100% against deer farms and think they should be completely outlawed, the risk is just not worth it to line the pockets of a few. JMO.

We have a few small wild game farms around here locally that raise fallow/red stag/elk for restaurant venison and velvet to Asians for dick powder. And a couple that do whitetails, albino and crazy horn to sell to pay&hunt places. Whenever any of their crap gets loose anyone is allowed to kill the escaped animals anytime of the year.

He didn't know it was a farm raised deer when he shot it

And tell me why deer farming should be outlawed? They are farm livestock. Interesting that you have that opinion telling someone what they can do on their property. And what are the risks you speak of? You do know CWD is a hoax right? EHD kills way more deer. So maybe less wild deer would eliminate EHD? I don't raise pen deer either.

CWD is not a hoax, and is potentially fatal to humans.

There is no place on earth that people are allowed to do whatever they want on their own land. Deer farming has become too big of a problem in most places. It would be better for the nation's wildlife if deer farming were outlawed.

This story is decades old from before CWD was much of a problem.

An old client/ gentleman of mine had a handful of tame deer. His fences got old and his 12 pointer got out. This guy had an attachment to that deer as it had been his for years. He was almost in tears. No record buck, but a darn nice buck with a small plastic ear tag.

Three to four months later a guy was hunting a few miles away. He killed it and returned the rack to the old guy after he saw the small ear tag. I am not sure what was done with the meat or the tag, but it was an interesting ending. The hunter lived about 70 miles away but through the ‘rural network’, the owner was found.

Kinda like shooting someone’s dog and returning the collar:emoji_sunglasses:

I've got opinions on lots of things, everybody does.

Deer farms are a huge risk to wild deer through passing disease...just ask the hunters from MI/WI/MN/CO that have had to deal with the repercussions firsthand. I wouldn't want some MEGA cow/pig/chicken/turkey farm anywhere close to my home because of the smell and potential to pollute groundwater, wouldn't want a crack house, porn shop or anything like that next to my home either...lots of reasons I would have an opinion on what people do with "their" property when it affects others or me in a negative way.

CWD is a hoax? I'd agree with you but then we would both be wrong ...... we have had over 8,200 deer in Wis test positive for CWD. I guess facts don't matter.

Can't recall for sure but I think CWD is going on close to 50 years. Not one human has ever contacted it. Again a cash cow throwing money at the DNR's. You know that 8200 deer test positive for CWD because someone shot them not because there are dead deer laying all over. How many tests do they run for EHD. Lately what other test have they been doing on humans that have positive results with no symptoms? I'm not sure of anything these days just watching and learning.

I think people are still eating cwd positive deer.

I don’t disagree with this. I think it’s real as in and actual disease but I don’t think it has the devastating effects that some people want to tout.

Fixed for the folks living in MO. :emoji_rolling_eyes:
That’s it…is it just an excuse to have the government lower deer numbers? I have a buddy in Wisconsin in a cwd zone, ground zero, his numbers are just fine and has literally seen zero dead deer on his farm from it.

There are numerous threads on just about any hunting related forum that debate this topic. I won't throw too much of my own two cents on this, but there have been at least a couple of good interviews on the Wired to Hunt podcast where they interviewed a few state agencies and addressed these very theories. Actually I can't recommend that podcast enough for pretty much anything deer hunting related.

Bummer for him. Probably a cool once in a lifetime experience tho.

We had a penned, CWD scare in our area, and DNR dropped the hammer on any form of baiting for 3 years. People still did. and they didn't get any cases.

It's real, but much like COVID, I feel the shadows they're boxing at are scarier than the real thing.
