Ozark Chinquapin

5 year old buck +
First winter down! These were planted as seeds this past spring. I’m hoping for some seed production in the next 3-5 years.

They are pretty close cousins to Allegheny Chinquipins. I would expect performance to be similar. I still have a few ACs on my deck that I overwintered. The last chestnut family tree I'm working with is the Seguin. I got a couple I started from seed. The Wildlife group has not sold them for the last couple years. I bought two from OKIOS last year, but it wasn't worth it. They were expensive and very tiny. One is leafing out right now but the other was already killed by squirrels. Seems no matter how many I shoot, more take there place in the neighborhood. Good Luck with the OCs. They are pretty rare these days.

Thanks,

Jack

IMG_0259.jpgthese are seguinns i started 5/18 from Schumachers. I received 166seeds in 3/18.I stratified them for 60 days
I then started 108 in RM18s 5/18 and graduated them from RM18s to RBII 1,RBII3, and finally root pouch 5 gallon 7/19
There are 36 in this photo that i will transplant to the field this winter

Outstanding! Mine did not fair that well. The year I bought from Schumacher every nut they sent had mold and none germinated. I bought a couple trees from the wildlife group and put them in 3 gal RB2s. They produced nuts on my deck. I did get a couple trees from those nuts, but the original trees died from some disease. It started in my apple trees when I had them indoors and moved on to the seguins. Don't know what it was.

So, I'm a couple years behind you. Yours look great and I would not be surprised if you get nuts this year!

Fall planted Ozark Chinquapins have germinated.

Checked the ones at the farm on the MO/IA border this weekend. These were planted last fall and came thru winter unscathed.
