    This is a closeup of the front and back of a leaf. The leaf has seven sharp spines--sharp enough that is painful to touch them. The leaf size varies somewhat from plant to plant. The one on the left is the same as the one above. The one on the right shows several leaves from a different plant.

    Thanks. I'm in Auburn, AL. I did a search, and it sure looks just like you said. I had never noticed it until the burn this year. Maybe I'll spray most of it, but leave a few clumps to see what it's like. I guess I could always come back next year and spray it. Charlie
