    Converting foodplot back into pasture

Ok so I know this is a good plot forum but I’m hoping there are maybe some farmers on here. I have a good plot that was half brassica and half clover two years ago. 4 acres total. We just put a fence around it to have a horse. Last summer I brush hogged everything down low (the brassica side was...

Doe bedding areas...can you create them in non-typical spots?

Thanks! I have a perfect area I think for what you describe to do both a doe and buck bedding site.

Doe bedding areas...can you create them in non-typical spots?

How far do you like these areas to be away from the food plot and paths you might walk in? Will it matter if there is not a water source near by? How far should that water source be? I could potentially make some man made water sources.

Doe bedding areas...can you create them in non-typical spots?

I have been reading about doe bedding areas and from what I can tell is most doe will bed in the vicinity of food/water. Outside of this requirement, they will typically pick spots based on cover, wind direction, and if hill country is involved on the east facing sides. I have been noticing that...

Do you plant beans with a drill or are you broadcasting them?

Should I abandon foodplot at my house?

Yes there is some AG around but this change is only this year. Why the previous years were good? I do understand that pulling deer to open woods is difficult and will consider doing some limited cutting. That being said, my concern is with the fact that the deer were there all summer hitting...

Should I abandon foodplot at my house?

I check my cams once a month if that and now ive gone to cell cams so that is definitely not an issue.

Should I abandon foodplot at my house?

that could potentially be true as I do not really know my neighbors BUT I only have a few neighbors and I would think I would have heard something about someone doing logging. I am definitely not certain on that though.

Should I abandon foodplot at my house?

All, This was my father's and my 3rd season food plotting at our two properties (both between 120-150 acres in size in NY). My father's property (8 miles away) is a hunting paradise for the area. Tons of deer and some pretty nice bucks for the area while my house is poor compared to his but...

Food plots went well, hunting has changed. What are your thoughts?

I wonder if this could be a possibility. Us and most the neighbors have started passing small bucks 3 years ago and yes we have been seeing many more younger bucks. Maybe that is part of the issue as well.

Food plots went well, hunting has changed. What are your thoughts?

Yeah I was wondering if maybe it just took the deer 3 years to adapt to the change. It was just really weird to see. I mean last year, all year, I could sit on a food plot and say to myself between 3-4pm the doe will show up and sure enough here came the train of doe. This would be all season...

Food plots went well, hunting has changed. What are your thoughts?

My father and I have been running food plots on 2 different properties for the past 3 years (This was our third year). One property is 120 acres the other is 150. Anyways, we have had a weird season this year. For the first two years, these plots were a doe hot spot. They would come pouring in...

is it too early to plant oats in NY?

Normally I would plant my cereal grains this weekend (labor day) or a few days after depending on rains and such. Well according to our forecast we are 90% rain tonight and tomorrow but then after that it is like 10% or less for the next two weeks. I live in NY and the temperatures are not super...

Does oats/Winter wheat grow as easily as winter rye?

To both of you, thanks for your comments. The other reason I dislike Rye is the fact it comes back in the spring. Life can get away from me (like this past spring/summer) and I might not get out to the field in time before the rye goes to seed which is exactly what happened this year. Now my...

Does oats/Winter wheat grow as easily as winter rye?

My soil is pH 6.9-7.1 so really good and I fertilized per soil test. I am not sure what happened in the spots that didn't grow....best guess is I simply didn't hit it with seed. I am not worried about soil conditions but rather with surface broadcasting as you have mentioned. Maybe ill just rake...
