Waterfowl

Nice!

Never shot a Can. I’ve seen a couple but always a mile high.

In SC Kansas we have so many geese they are a pest. With the last cold front coming from south the duck hunting hasn't been to great. It's closed now for the split so hopefully it's better when it reopens

I drove through your neck of the woods a few weeks ago. The flocks of geese on the west side of town unreal! They were everywhere.

Well, I was told the ducks were starting to show up down here so I went to the property Saturday morning for a little pass shooting and saw 18. Had there been three of us to cover the area, we would have had a decent shoot, unfortunately it was just me and I only had 3 in my comfort range and of course, missed.

Sunday I went to some public water and had two pairs come through and managed 1 from each pair. Unfortunately I got a hen out of the first pair as it was still grey and I could not tell so I shot the lead bird.

Good looking ole' boy. I have a new fox red that I'm hot to get into the fields, but we're done for the year here in WNY. Not much snow this year, though, so the training continues unabated.

This weekend was a bust for ducks although I did see 4. Could have shot geese both days, but decided to pass for some reason. I did make the most of it and turned the duck hunts into bass fishing trips both mornings.

I live a few miles from a good sized refuge and we normally have around 3K Canada geese spread out around the area...last week it jumped to 8K+ with a bunch of northern birds stopping in acting hungry and lost.
Our duck season ended last Sunday the 24th but goose is in yet until this Saturday. There is a small flock of specks hanging around and those would be trophy birds to get here.
My youngest went out this Saturday with a few friends and stacked them, yesterday was slower but they still got a few. This afternoon he and a buddy of mine are going to be in a really good field that was holding birds last night when I checked it on the way home from work. I'm covered in OT right now at work but maybe can get out one more time before it's over.

If you have access to a meat grinder...we have been taking some of the boned out goose meat and mixing it with bacon then pressing into patties, maybe a 4 to 1 ratio goose/bacon. They are AWESOME!

Never tried grinding with bacon, but I bet it is good! My brother makes jerky or sausage out of them. I have made fajitas and sausage out of them and been happy. I just didn't feel like messing with them this weekend for some reason. Probably because the bass were biting pretty good.

Our waterfowl ended Sunday, and I am hunting on public land with a lot of others (had to go to a last ditch option Saturday after 3 other options). I can pass shoot wood ducks on my lease as they head to the swamps that back up to our property, but it only last about 10 minutes and they are on you quick through the trees. Hope you are able to get back out.

When you have access to the "right" field, you don't need a big spread to whack em! Appears a doz foots or less was more than adequate. Congratulations!

We actually did have one flying around the edge of town a few years ago that must have been an aviary escape, spotted it a few times but never over the decoys. I know they shoot some in LA and have a small local breeding flock in OR.

Also counted six banded brown pelicans last week

Cool! Are you allowed to shoot Mandarin ducks? I saw one a few years ago, but it was in a park where no guns are allowed.

Wonder what they ask if you called in a pelican band :emoji_stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

They ask where you saw it and what was its status. Then you get a certificate from the Department of Interior with info on the bird's status and location when it was banded.

In Ohio you are, prolly anywhere in the states they aren't native.
