New man cave/deer blind

Adittmer

5 year old buck +
6 years ago I made a destination plot on our 40ac and plopped a 6x6 box blind in the middle. It was 16ft floor height and had no windows. After realizing it needed windows and the location was not great in the middle of the field with our north west wind and deer bedding location the wife and I lowered it down with the tractor to add windows and put it on another spot on our land.

Last weekend after many nights of thinking we started construction on this pig lol.

6x6 treated posts 16’, footings dug 4’ with 2000lbs of concrete. 12’x12’ floor with a finished floor height of 11’ from grade. It will have a storage shed below and stairs with landings and most likely a wood stove because iv always dreamed of having one in a stand lol.

Nice! Not messing around!

2000lbs? How wide did you make the holes? If you went 2x’s the post diameter @ 48 inches deep you should have only needed 300lbs per hole.

That's going to be great!

A wife who will drive a post hole digger and allow photos..........you have already won the lottery.

The stand looks excellent.

Two of the holes were off so the had to get widen out. They are over 4ft deep. Not sure I had 24 bags on that pallet and used all of them then grabbed more from the shed.

Dang, that’s a lot of concrete! Gonna be pretty sweet when you're finished.

I'm looking forward to hearing how the wood burner works out. I've contemplated doing the same thing in a blind. A nice dry, vented heat that won't choke you or fog up the windows like propane heaters do. The only thing that has stopped me so far is worrying how the deer may react to the smoke curling out of the chimney.

Yes it should be interesting to see how it all plays out. I’m thinking the smoke smell might not be that big of a deal because of all the cabin 1/4 mile away with its wood stove and everyone else cabin/camp fire burning throughout the year it might not matter as much.

Snuck up quick Saturday night with a buddy to look at the flashing on our chimney pipe on our cabin and quick banged out the floor joists, forgot to bring the joist nails so we tacked them in and I’ll install the hoist hangers next time and put the 3/4” treated plywood flooring down and maybe try and build a 4’x4’ landing for the top of the stairs and build some stair stringers.

I think that may require a building permit in my county!

In all honesty now....are you at risk of having this assessed as a "structure" on your property taxes?

Knowing sawyer county wi.... I’d say those jerks would rip there own mother off lol. Bottom line is life’s to short so if that’s what they need to do so be it. I’m going to have fun and not worry about them.

I don't think the smell will bother at all. I've used smoke as a cover scent for several years now.
I once sat in an old grain bin the deer had been passing by during late season. The wind was wrong so I kept a bee smoker smoking in the bin behind me the whole hunt. Several deer passed through the smoke, none showed any reaction.
I'm more worried about the sight of smoke puffing out the chimney catching there attention.

That looks good. How are the deer numbers in your area? I have some hunting land in Rusk County WI and it seems like there are more deer running around this year than the past few years.

Do you think you'll have any issues with the bears tearing up the stand? I have some elevated permanent stands on 4x4 posts and the bears love marking their territory on the posts by chewing them up at eye level. I've had to reinforce them several times and add nails to discourage chewing certain areas.

I will probably wrap barbed wire around the posts. They tore up a stand near this one a few ago pretty bad so I also keep that I. The back of my mind

I had a wood stove in my deer stand for a few years. I don’t have any insulation so wood was cheaper heat. Deer would stand in the smoke and didn’t seam to have any issues with it. I removed it for two reasons, first was noise, the second was having to reload the wood supply every day. It got noisy and drew attention to my stand. I went with propane, I have two 20 lb tanks with a sunflower heater and a small buddy heater. The sunflower heater is great first thing in the morning. Buddy heater is ok during the warmer part of the day. I had a guy in my township that needed a permit for his two 10x10 and a 12x12. In Sawyer county I would just go get a permit and be done with it. Washburn County you would get a $600.00 dollar fine plus you would still need to buy the permit.

Cool project! I am jelous lol
Look forward to watching your progress!
