Honeycrisp

5 year old buck +
To Maya or any of the other apple guru's, I am wanting a Honeycrisp or two for the house. I'm on the line for 5b or 6a where it will be planted. These are for me not the deer. I've heard Honeycrisp can be difficult, any advice on rootstock or anything else that may help me? I have a liberty and enterprise on 118 that seem to be doing good on the same soil.

What kind of soil do you have, Swat ?? Does it have a fair amount of clay or is it more loamy, sandy ?? That will help Maya or any of the other apple guys make a recommendation.

I have about 18" of descent topsoil, fairly loamy. Below that is sandy/gravel. Very, very well drained soil.

I can plant them in my yard, where they will get full sun. Cummins doesn't have any on B118. Anybody have another source?

As NH said above, talk to Cummins and tell them your exact situation / soil / location / expectation, etc. Steve, Alan, and Tino are more than helpful on such things. I asked much the same questions as you for my HOME apple tree, and they were very helpful for rootstock choice.

Steve Cummins - (607) 227-6147 or cumminsnursey.com - - - I have no affiliation with Cummins, just a satisfied customer.

There have been discussions that HC grown in warmer climates do not have the best flavor.

Swat, if they are for you, I'd recommend them on M7, or something in that range. W/ your soil you should do fine on anything. I've got a number on M111 and M7 and they do real well. I also grow them on G11, 16 and B9 in my tall spindle. I really like growing those, but you need to keep them permanently staked/trellised and fenced. Make sure you really thin them yearly as they are biennial bearing, especially in early years. They also require calcium, so check that when doing a soil sample. I hit them w/ a foliar application of calcium nitrate. If on a non bearing year be careful not to over fertilize.

They are a little more work, but well worth the effort imo. These are M111 this past week. We've picked about 5 bushel on each of these this year and left some blemished ones for the deer.... Good luck!

Also, they are in demand, so don't be surprised if you can't find much. Probably order now for 2018. You might be able to find a stray or 2 here or there. .....G11

Sorry I didnt respond sooner, I swear somethings dont get pushed into the "whats new" button at the top of the screen, that and I havent been on here nearly as much the last couple of weeks (too busy with deer season). Shoot me a PM if you like I have Honey Crisp on M7 and M106. My inventory sheet shows I still have one on B118 as well, but I would want to verify that first.

TC, can you send me a PM of what you have in inventory and prices for 100 trees if you have it. For everything you have, not just HC's...thanks

I'd order from TC Swat. That would save you a lot of looking around and I know his trees would be good. If I would also pay a little extra and get some feathered trees, if he has them. That will get you some fruit sooner normally......

Second TC trees I have several at my home place. The first cripps pink didn't leaf out he sent replacements that were bigger than the first ones.

Yea, I already have some of his trees. I'm going to change my Cummins Honey crisps to a couple deer trees, if they'll let me.
