Ide’s of March Apple Variety Profile

Looks like I'll be repeating the experiment! I grafted onto a robust dolgo roostock and put it in MG potting mix. A little tip dieback on very vigorous growth is not particularly concerning for me.

Any idea if 1 out of how many ever there are now is a bad number or a good number?

My update report: All the Dolgo seedlings I bench grafted with Ide's of March in spring of 2021 are looking good. So are the Malus Domestica and Dolgo seedling trees I top worked with Ide's of March that spring. I've observed no issues to far.

I have contacted all 17 HT members that I sent Ide’s of March (IoM) scion to, and there has been only one graft with FB. The affected shoot was clipped off and that graft recovered and is now doing well. I believe that many of those 17 members made several IoM grafts.

The IoM seedling tree and all 11 of my IoM grafts are disease free as well.

Here's the update from me.

My bench grafts I made with Ide's of March in March of 2021 are doing well. So are the two previously established whips that I topworked with it in the field. None of the Ide's of March limbs I tacked onto a bearing Dolgo seedling tree that year have blossom buds yet this year, though neither do any of the other varieties I did that with, except for Kerr.

I order a bunch of bareroot seedlings from willis, they were too thin to graft. I do have ides of march parked on an old mcintosh tree, the scion started to leaf out. Used alot of the kerr scions from oaknut, about 11 out of 12 leafed out. the one runt of the litter might sprout though. I am 2 for 12 from 39th parallel for some reason, just a kieffer and gin pear are going. I did put a dabinett on a old mcintosh tree, and thats my only successful scion from them. Got a bunch of M111's with dead scions on them. I only grafted 2 m111's with habitat talk member's scions, both signal fire and big dog are doing well. Had about 18 antonovka bareroots from last year I grafted. Almost all are accepting their grafts.

You ought to send him a message with a couple photos. I have had great success with his trees, and very good service.

Sent an email to mike at 39th parallel. He asked me if I bleached my scions. It helps out alot with success rate. He was happy to send me scions next spring for free.

One of my Ide's of March bench grafts that I am growing in pots died of fire blight this summer. The other bench grafts of it are looking good.

I spliced Ide's of March onto a bearing Dolgo seedling rootstock tree three springs ago. The limbs have grown vigorously, but haven't blossomed yet. I top worked a standard rootstock tree with it back then as well. Those scions grew quite vigorously as well. Maybe this is one of those varieties that makes a guy think it will never blossom and suddenly one year it gets hundreds of blossoms on it. Others of my apple trees have pulled that trick on me over the years.

Spring of 2022 I grafted Ides of March onto a m111 rootstock that was planted spring of 2020. She's 9'+ now and blooming for the first time. As of last week. Also have Ides of March grafted on Dolgo rootstock at the same time. That one is blooming as well.
