First year crabs

I planted a Dolgo and a Callaway crab from TWG this year. They were 3’ whips. They have good growth. I caged them up and put screen around the bottom 18” the day of planting. They are branching out a lot inside the screen and the leaves are bunching up.

Did I put the screen up too high?

Should I remove the screen or trim all the growth back? Leave it alone for the first year? Not sure what the best option is.
