What motivates you as a habitat guy/land manager?

It's not any one thing for me, but deep at it's core I love and have a passion for 2 things that drive habitat improvement for me. The first is the obvious love of the outdoors, don't need to go more into this, but anything that can get me outside, I'm all in. The second is a desire to tinker...

    Chief River Nursery

Yeah I was originally drawn to them because their doug firs were the cheapest around, even compared to local. I will still reserve judgment based on what I receive though. There's 2 schools of thought here. Those that don't have the time or property to scavenge for trees and those who don't...

    Chief River Nursery

Placed a smallish sub $200 order yesterday for some doug firs I want to plant as a property privacy wall and threw some 2'-3' white oaks in the cart. They are by far the cheapest for doug firs and reasonable for the oaks. Will update this thread if it's a sh!t show or if it turns out well.

    Native and Non-Native Oaks

Interesting and I'd wonder too. Sure you're going to lose some growth as its transplanted, but I guess I'm not sure I could see the seedlings catching up? Any science to support this?

    Native and Non-Native Oaks

yeah that's exactly why I drove almost an hour because you just don't find these. They were roughly $40 a piece, and at that height I felt that was a pretty damn good price.

    Native and Non-Native Oaks

So I made the 50 minute drive both ways to the nursery that was recommended. He was smaller than I had imagined, but I like supporting small bussinesses. It was a piss poor day raining and muddy. Helped him dig out the trees which were potted, but burried in mud and mulch. In the commotion it...

    Chief River Nursery

Has anyone ever ordered from these folks? I subscribe to "if it looks to good to be true" and their prices seem just that for some of the oaks and conifers I was looking at. At least compared to some other online retailers. Or maybe their prices are good and I'm just new to this. Recommend some...

help me understand why a hybrid is better than native? I see so many mixed opinions here. Is it truly ford vs chevy here? I'm in zone 6.

    Native and Non-Native Oaks

We know oaks take a while, which is why I think people tend to go with food plots and chestnuts... just lack of patience. But I don't think an oak can be beaten for great habitat. I will probably spend a little more to buy some oaks that are a few years old already and maybe that helps get me a...

    Native and Non-Native Oaks

Coming back to this thread as the planting season is near. I have canceled my order of sawtooth oak and I'm now looking at native oaks. I will plant 2 or 3 swamp oaks in an area that isn't well drained. In my open field area I'd like to plant 4 to 6. My choices from a local nursery varying in...

Appreciate this advice. It would be a very sunny area, but you've given me something to think about with drop and snowfall.

It's an old semi-commercial orchard and more than I can handle. At this point it's sort of trying to stop thing from completely falling apart and as some of the trees die off, I cut them down. Minimal spraying isn't helping the peaches. The apples are rocking though.

    Native and Non-Native Oaks

I'm about to start a smallish oak project on my property. It's 40 acres with about 20 acres of hardwoods and 20 of fruit orchard (apple, peach, plum and pear). Surrounded by agriculture (hundreds of acres of mostly corn with some soy). My food plots don't attract a ton of attention with all...
