    Trailcam pics

I think the rough cold snap in PA has the bucks’ brains scrambled..they’re chasing and fighting like it’s early November

    Clover seed before the storm.

Heres a question ive been tossing around...for liming, if I am going to lightly till (max 3" depth)..is it better to get my lime down earlier (as in as soon as the ground is not covered in snow and I get ahold of the lime) or is it better to wait and lime it the day of tilling just prior to the...

    2026 Food Plot Experiment Plan

I plan to wait at least 2-3+ weeks from the till time to the spraying/seeding time. I’ve jumped the gun on the seeding/spraying too soon before and am still dealing with the repercussions…there are already some good trails approaching both plots..I may actually widen them and clear them out a...

    2026 Food Plot Experiment Plan

I am not too worried about the cover aspect in either plot, as both are well away from any roads and plot 2 is actually down over a hill completely secluded from any sightlines to buildings. I had bucks in it the first year from about 5 PM on and killed my buck a little after 6 PM 2 weeks into...

    2026 Food Plot Experiment Plan

So I just had an idea for this spring/fall 2026...(bear with me I'm a biologist by degree and an amateur farmer at heart) I have 2 plots at my in laws place, one is a ~0.4 acre plot that was mowed/sprayed/seeded in the summer/fall 2023 (see this thread...

    Plant the right grass

i would want it to be as tall and thick and durable as possible .....i have a 2 brush hog width path already mowed from the plot to the west into the plot to the east and the deer use it like crazy...betting they would use it even more if it was surrounded by 6-9' grass...

    Plant the right grass

Would these grasses work for a good cover stretch in between 2 food plots? In the pic, you can see the mowed thin, rectangular plot to the left (cafeteria plot) and the start of my fruit tree/food plot on the right. In the middle is a 2 year post burn hayfield cover/bedding area (about an acre)...

    Willows

I have a couple hybrids growing along the bottom edge of my front field in a wet spot..i have not noticed any spreading, but man do they grow fast....i planted them in the spring of 2021 and the tree that is in the lowest (see: wettest) spot is probably close to 30' tall and about as big around...

    Your best persimmon purchase?

I didnt hold off a year... I just happened to make my way over to Blue Hill's webiste (ok I might check it more often than not)...and now I have a Full Draw and a Yates persimmon coming in the spring...this forum is a bad (see:good) influence for a guy just trying to get through winter and not...

    Your best persimmon purchase?

i think im gonna hold off a year (a statement rarely uttered by fruit tree anonymous members) on the persimmons and try to make some room in a fencerow because they get so big

    Your best persimmon purchase?

how long do they usually take to produce? I'm intrigued by them as something to make my place stand out, but I am also very impatient (also have never had one to eat so that would be a draw also)

    Clover seed before the storm.

i had thought about spreading some lime on one of my fields as it is bare ground right now but never got around to it...agree its probably about 3 weeks to a month too early for frost seeding

    Mine still hanging

Got some Roadkill left (orange flagging), Droptine (tall with lots of limbs) and Golden Hornet left…really wishing I had more late droppers to help the critters in the next few weeks..gonna be pretty brutal with a lot of snow (for PA) and cold temps and wind..afraid we are gonna lose some deer...

    Crabs winter food

Though not a crab, I have a huge forsythia bush thats covers maybe 15 sq ft and is maybe 8' tall in spots, right outside my living room window in a small patch of woods that attracts tons of birds at all times of year. I've seen them about this time of year eating the buds and hiding in it. One...

Jump-starting succession in a field with brush piles?

Might try this.. my FIL works at a lumber yard so pallets are easy to come by! I just don’t want the deer to be any more spooky than they already are at my place!

Jump-starting succession in a field with brush piles?

Brush pile update: making another one in between the existing two..to put a blind in so my 4 year old can hunt with me next year in a blind overlooking my food/tree plot..tried him in a double stand this year and it was the definition of an exercise in Futility....the northern existing pile did...

    Crabapple timeline

Yeah was out yesterday doing a few small drives. We got deer out each time but I still haven’t pulled a trigger yet. I don’t use a muzzleloader anymore as I had way too many misfires and just plain misses in easy bow range…

Got some new Alpha Burleys (800 g variety) and my brother came through big time with a sweet First Lite jacket (my current outer fleece is probably 20+ years old and a size medium..i haven’t been a medium in 20 years..)….here’s to being warm in the new year!
