    Turkey Calls

Made a few more calls, stumbled into 5 Walmart sacks of perfectly sized walnut pieces, and got the 3rd kid of the season their 1st turkey.

    Turkey Calls

I’ve never seen one made out of a turtle shell. I’ll have to check that out!

    Turkey Calls

    Recently purchased a lathe and began making pot calls. It has become an addiction. Now I need to cut some more blanks to turn. Here are a few I’ve made, the first few were nothing fancy;

    CRYPTOMERIA

Good to know, I have seen the affects of the beetles out west in the mountains. Seems like a good reason to steer clear of the Yoshino Japanese Cedar. Thanks!

    CRYPTOMERIA

I understand it's not "native," but didn't know where else to post it. I was browsing The Wildlife Group 2021-2022 (not sure how I got the old version) catalog and ran across CRYPTOMERIA Japanese Cedar, their description is below; CRYPTOMERIA(Japanese Cedar) USDA Zones 5-9Cryptomeria is...

Trees pruned to fit in shipping box

A couple years ago I had some apples/pears that I transplanted. They had been in the ground for 2 years. Some of them were 7ft tall. I was in a rush digging them up and they lost lots of roots. I didn't expect any of them to make it, but planted them anyway. I cut the tops back a ways too...

    Native and Non-Native Oaks

Not sure if you've seen this thread or not. I have some of these growing and I am excited to see what they turn into. If they end up half as good as Teeders I will be happy.

    Planting/seedlings table

Whoops I misread that. I’m using pallets

    Planting/seedlings table

Following, I need something too...I was thinking something with a back on it as well. When soil falls on the table just use a shovel to scoop it up against the back of the table.

    Best Midwest bedding/Cover possible?

Thanks for the info. I’m waiting to hear if this field is eligible with the new bill or not. I can’t find where it says what years the field had to be row crops. I’m leaning towards taking out 1/2 acre every year of crops and planting whatever I want. I’ll wait and see what the offer is though.

Concordia Oaks and Swamp / Bur Hybrids

Good to know Its crossed my mind to put a piece of window screen over the top until the tree reaches it to minimize wasps.

Concordia Oaks and Swamp / Bur Hybrids

Was that in tubes with trees that had not reached the top of the tube? I assume once the tree gets large enough to fill a certain percentage of the tube birds are not an issue?

Concordia Oaks and Swamp / Bur Hybrids

Yep it did get caught in the bird net. I have removed most of them since then. That’s good to know, I was wondering if birds are actually anything to be concerned about

Concordia Oaks and Swamp / Bur Hybrids

Here is an update on the Bottomland Bur Oak. It Is by far the best one I have growing. Planted in May 2020 as a 20-30" seedling it is now 10ish feet tall with a spreading habit. In 2021 it doubled in size. I didn't get any pics in 2022, but I did in 2023. Should I do any pruning on this or...

It’s considered a “superfood” not sure how legitimate all of the articles are, but it’s interesting to read about them. Here’s a screenshot from one article

    Best Midwest bedding/Cover possible?

The more I’m thinking about this project the more I’m thinking I will forget about any sort of CRP program. It’s not going to be a huge loss rent wise and then I can do whatever I want with it. Everyone here has a different idea. My plan now is to decommission a small piece every year and...
