Deer account for almost half of long-term forest change, study finds

Very informative. I think setting up a deer exclosure is a very good way to see if you have an over browsing issue. I have toured areas that utilize exclosure fences, and it's amazing to see the difference between what grows inside and outside of the fence. I would recommend that anyone with...

    Biggest Crabapples

That sounds like a great idea to me. What would a guy have to loose if he were to plant 100 of each for several years? Is that a dumb idea? I think I will try it unless someone can tell me why not to.

    New chainsaw help

A good alternative to chaps is "safety pants." For about the same price ($70.00) you can get the pants. They are easy to put on, resist snow and water, don't snag, ride up or get caught on limbs as easily as chaps and still provide protection. They can get a little warm once temps get above...

    Realizing A Dream

Awesome looking property! Looks like a lot of fun. What are your plans for the newly released Apple trees as far as pruning goes? I have topped suppressed, tall and spindly Apple before with iffy results. Some actually died. Is it best to just leave them alone and let the extra sunlight do...

WI Guys.....CDAC 2nd round of meetings this week

Survey completed. Doe only or limited buck season in counties where CDAC recommendations are to "reduce herd" is just what is needed. If EAB is out, something has to replace it. Guess I am one of the fudds. Do not agree with any "bonus buck" option.

    N WI swamp/marsh area

Have you noticed if the beetle affects saplings?..............or does it just target the larger trees.

Snow now too deep to get into the woods

Very true. I think most of us in the midwest do not have anything to complain about so far this winter season. At least compared to the last two winters.

Has anyone been in this situation?

When we owned a farm in BC WI, I wondered about that exact question asked to our daughters. Now that we own land in far Northern WI, I don't worry about it.:D If the boyfriend is willing to put the time and effort into hunting a WI Northwoods buck............go for it!! If he can put up with...

WI Guys.....CDAC 2nd round of meetings this week

According to this article, deer numbers in the North are where they should be. The Author says “My big message for policymakers is we should follow some other states like Pennsylvania in basing our deer management on the habitat conditions that the deer are existing in.”...

Snow now too deep to get into the woods

About five inches on the ground here in Buffalo Co. WI. 1-3 inches expected here tonight. Snowing hard right now. Put several cords of wood on the ground yesterday with hopes of hauling it out later in the week when temps moderate.

    Logging Tactics

You may leave some money on the table by splitting the job. With that said, I would have one parcel done now and the other done at a later time.

What to spray before planting conifer trees?

    Yes, definitely before bud break.

What to spray before planting conifer trees?

I have used Oust XP at 1/2 to 3/4 Oz. per acre mixed with Princep at 1 gallon per acre with excellent results. If you get thistle or burdock later in the season, you might have to hit it with Transline. You can spray Transline (active ingredient Clopyralid) right over growing conifers.

    Hemlock Seedling Planting Questions

Unless the deer leave your property and winter somewhere else, some type of protection will be needed to get them to survive.

Is there a sure way to determine if soils are well drained enough for a plot?

From the pictures you have posted, I would say go with a food plot. It looks to me like you have Northern Hardwoods growing in the area you are talking about. That tells me that it is not too wet to have a food plot. I know that your area has received a ton of rain the last two years. In a...
