Let's eat some fresh 2019 apples

The more I eat those Priscilla the more I like them Steve. They are sweet and crispy thanks for letting us come get some yesterday. I let several people at work try them too and they like them as well. If I seen these at the store I would pick them up but I don’t think I ever have.

    Which Grafting Knife?

I’ve got one like the top but it don’t have the blade for lifting bark to do budding. I also picked up a mora chisel knife and it seems to be good too grafted several this year with it. For field grafting I think it would be ideal because you can sheath it on a belt and don’t have to open and...

    Northern Spy Vigor

How big did those trees get? I’m curious about northern spy as a rootstock.

    Apple Rootstocks and Interstem Combinations

I’ve currently got a OHXF 333 on a Callery pear and haven’t decided what to graft onto it. I also have a g30 on b118 and a p20 I believe on m111 but I did this for the heck of it more than any particular reason.

    An unpleasant finding

I had probably 10-15 failures on m111 last year too my roots came from williamette nursery. I ended up getting seedlings from them this year since they are cheaper.

    Something to try before pruning

The specific apple variety plays a role too. I had one that rooted readily in one season and another didn’t put roots on the whole season but I think it will this coming year.

    Something to try before pruning

That should work well for apples if you get moist sawdust around the limb it will root without having to ring the bark. I would like to try this with pears chestnuts and persimmons this year. I’ve tried air layering once before and it’s more work and harder to do than I thought. This isn’t a...

What the @#%@ is this ?

I had a professor in college that traveled to regions that had chagas and the assasin bugs. They had forgot their bug nets to sleep at night. They ended up sleeping in a small room with the lights on to discourage the bugs. Apparently they are attracted by the carbon monoxide that’s exhaled and...

    Knotty apple limbs? Any ideas

Anyone know what causes these small knots around the buds? I noticed them this past weekend while pruning. I’m hoping it’s nothing serious I thought it was just one cultivar but I noticed on most of my apples throughout the orchard. Thanks Daniel

When do you prune or trim apple trees?

I’ve seen some places mention summer pruning instead of dormant can reduce the vigor of a tree and potentially make them bear earlier because they put so much effort into pushing new growth after dormant pruning. Does anyone have any experience with this? The one down side was it’s harder to...

How long do apple trees take to bear fruit? Shortest way?

An antonovka or p18 with a g30 interstem might be interesting. Would still have a large tree that should be more precocious. The only down side is there could be potential problems with bur knots and no one has put a lot of effort into interstem combinations. You also can’t buy these have to do...

    Wild pear grafting.

That’s some large pear trees. We have several of these at our place but much smaller. I need to transplant a couple. A hunters choice from the wildlife group and the other an Ayers. I think these are an excellent free source of rootstock. Grafting these over helps prevent birds from spreading...

Apple seeds from grocery store apples

I use the fine peat moss for chestnuts instead of spaghum moss. The peat is partially decayed from the bogs and spaghum is what they harvest yearly. At least that’s the way I understand it from others. I just soak the peat with water squeeze it out and put the chestnuts in. I haven’t had any...

Apple seeds from grocery store apples

Does anyone know if apple seeds can be stored for later germination? I have done them in the fridge before but what if it’s a summer apple and want to wait until the following spring?

P18 rootstock - Pros and Cons?

What would you consider prolonged periods of time? Anyone have experience with Malus Fusca (pacific crab) for a wet feet root? I’ve seen it mentioned it may tolerate water better than others.
