    Big Rock Hybrid Poplar

Those with experience planting hybrid poplar and 3' weed mat. If you are in an area of high density, have you had to protect your cuttings year one? I'm a little worried the deer will either nip the cutting off or eat every leaf as it pops and kill them. If I do have to protect them, I'd like...

    Opinions on American bittersweet

I have tried American bittersweet several times. I have one plant vining on one tree on one property that I've seen, so I knew it could grow in the area. The deer never let it survive a single season. Usually only a month or so. I even planted 3 plants by the house thinking the deer wouldn't...

    After clear cut planting?

Thanks for the ideas guys. The NCRS guy is coming out to see what we could do with them. As for goals, wildlife habitat is deer, grouse, turkey primarily, then any other kinds of birds, squirrels and rabbits I suppose.

    After clear cut planting?

Honestly more concerned with wildlife than money on this piece, so Christmas trees wouldn't make much sense.

    After clear cut planting?

Maybe a decade or so. Not sure but when it became valuable enough I'd offload it and buy something else. As for how much per acre to amend, I have no clue since I haven't done a soil test but money isn't much of an issue here. I'm not gonna plant 5,000 container trees or something like that...

    After clear cut planting?

Interesting thought. I've never even considered mushrooms but that's kind of a neat idea. I'm not really worried about future value of trees. The place is zoned urban fringe now so the 105 acres will likely be worth much more in the future as development land than any trees on it. Plus there's...

    Small logging job

I suppose it mostly depends on the trees not the acreage. I had a forester come look at some walnuts on my place. He got a logger to give us a contract for about $11,000 for 26 trees.

    After clear cut planting?

So it looks like I'll be getting 11ish acres of 60 year old pine clearcut from my new land in southeastern MN (4b). If you had a choice of what to plant into the cutting, what would it be? I'm leaning towards all shrubs, and have my own list in mind but let me hear some other ideas. Top 5 or...
