    Crabapples in the South

Yes sir. Might be the most precocious apple I have and disease resistant as well. Seems to bear every year and has a unique and pretty tasty flavor. Also hangs on the tree after ripe if you are looking for a late dropper. Ripens early to mid Nov in S. MI.

    Goldrush

Jhoss, you must have been born without tastebuds if you left those Goldrush for the deer! I have a crisper full of them right now from your neck of the woods and they are awesome. We picked them around Nov 10.

    Crabapples in the South

Look up Yates. Originated in GA, but is one of my favorite deer apples (large crabapple) in MI.

    Your go to apple

So far, I have had the most consistent production with Centennial/Chestnut for early and Yates/Violi's Hanging for late. These are all crabs of course. As for apples, Pristine for early and Galarina and Goldrush for late seem to be very reliable for me. I got started with Liberty a little...

    What stage are you trees?

Just got the first look at my trees since March. I'd say apples are 50% petal fall, 25% each, bloom and fruit set. Pears have all set fruit. They are calling for 33 tonight, but I'm a bit low here, so hoping I don't have much/any damage. Crop load looks very high this year. I'm in southern...

    I caved in

Won't be long until you start bulldozing your woods. It'll be easier in the long run if you just accept that now.

    Left over scion

Well, a lightbulb went off, so I checked the Cummins list. They still have some trees left. I ended up with Golden Russet, Roxbury Russet, E. Spitz, Newtown Pippen, Cox's Orange, and King David. I am hoping to nab a few scions from these trees for topworking some more mature trees that need a...

    Left over scion

I understand completely. Just received a text from my accountant--he had to leave early today with a kidney stone, I can't even imagine. If you have anything left around May 15, that's when I actually need it. I have plenty of scionwood in the fridge at my place in MI, i just have 6 or 7...

How easily are you bribed, Mr. Wombles?

    Who's ready to plant?

Wow, Ed/Matt...really nice trees! I sense a second career coming on.

    Leftover Scion?

I know it is kind of a long shot at this point, but I am wondering if any of you guys have leftover scion. I am planning on doing some more topworking this year and have a few varieties I'd like to add. I am looking for.... Golden Russet Wickson Spitzenberg Wm Pride Albemarle/Newton Pippen...

    SLIP BABY SLIP!!!!

I'm a couple hours south of Rally and I did mine a week into May. Several trees were in full bloom that I cut off to graft. Bark slipped so easily I thought I was doing something wrong and had nearly 100% survival. Some of my scions grew 8 feet and are the size of my thumb. I believe you...

Is it just me OR ----

Wow, I haven't been around in a while due to an illness in the family, and I see this! Not sure why people come and go on these forums, but unfortunately (and sometimes fortunately), they do. Others will come along, and I'm sure (based on the people who have posted on this thread) that there...

    Grafting Outside (when)...?

For topworking, wait until after the tree (rootstock) is starting to leaf out. Last year, I grafted close to 100 seedling crabs in Jackson County around May 10 or so. I had very close to 100% take. The only downside is that you have to store your scion wood for longer. I think most people...

    Ashmead's Kernel

I ordered 2 of those boxes for my wife for Christmas. They must be a bit variable as we didn't get any Arkansas Black. I, too had my first AK, and the hype is justified. I already have 3 or 4 at my place, so hoping they produce without too many problems. Did you get to try a Roxbury Russet...

    Pruning Questions

Having a very high deer population, I have gone through the same thought processes. I have found that getting rid of most of the lower growth early doesn't change the time until you reach your goal with the tree--bearing with first scaffolds at 5 feet. I've tried multiple ways and have settled...

    Galarina

Very easy to grow, and based on the recs of Ben and others, I planted it solely for a deer apple. I was pleasantly shocked at what a good eater it is. One weird thing about apples is the eating quality can vary year to year. This might have been an extra special year for it at my place, but...

    Galarina

Just an update on the Galarinas. My parents took a few dozen with them and the rest we put in the dehydrator. Fast forward a couple of months with my parents down in FL, I noticed they still had a couple in the crisper yesterday. The skin was a bit wrinkled, but I was shocked at how great the...

    2013 Norway Spruce Plantings

I've planted at least 1000 NS and 500 WS and the only ones living are the caged ones around my yard. Everything else has been eaten to a stick. As I start taking apple cages off, I am going to start caging groups of 4-5 spruce in critical bedding areas. I just couldn't see buying any more...

    Persimmon Fruit wow taste great!

p Pretty sure those are Asian Persimmon as well. I have read that they aren't good deer trees for the reason you mention--the fruits persist until spring. They are delicious for humans, though. You should be able to get them with a ladder and apple/orange picker.
