Agreed.
I think the genetically modified trees were really pushed because they could scale up at a much faster pace than waiting for generations of trees to come to nut bearing age.
I have some Ozark Chinquapins from last year and some seed from this year that I’m putting in the ground this spring.
I also helped a friend fertilize his yard tree he got from the Conservation Dept. They gave him some resistant pollen. So I have some seeds from that. Would love to see these...
Letemgrow,
Could you get leaves from both trees sampled with the oxalate test? I have no idea how hard or costly it is.
Some where out there has to be some American's with resitance.
Here’s a few pics of the Regals I just found.
As the acorn matures, it’s much easier to pull out of the cap. This may help them be a later drop acorn.
Which gives me a thought. A Post Oak generally has a later drop than a White Oak or a SWO. If someone would make a columnar English/Post Oak...
Thanks for the reply OakSeeds.
I was concerned about my east-west configuration, mostly because once they reach 30' tall that they would shade some of the foodplot directly to the north of the screen. On second thought, I don't believe it will be much of a problem. I might take advantage of...
OakSeeds,
Any chance you could give an update on your use of columnar oaks as tree screens? Up until this point, we've mostly focused on individual trees, etc. I'd like to hear about how your screens are coming along. I'm planning on putting one in this coming spring with Regal Prince acorns...
I went to their website. Great info, but a little dated. That was the first I'd heard of them finding some resistant American Chestnuts.
The Ozark Chinquapin has been very successful doing the exact same thing.
Is there a way for a person to get some ACCF seed? They haven't updated since...
Last year I had heard of a version of the columnars that was a Red Oak. Green Pillar Pin Oak(PrinGreen) was its name.
Earlier today, I noticed these columnar shaped Reds as landscaping for a parking lot. The parking lot is only a year old so these haven’t been here long. I decided to turn...
Great information, Letemgrow. I didn't realize that, and it gives hope that some of the original chestnuts can pull through.
It brings back a memory of grade school. I was in 2nd or 3rd grade and a local hunter had brought in a handful of chestnuts. I remember him telling us how all the...
What a fantastic thread. I learned a lot from it.
I had been searching for a local columnar variety for a while, and I finally found some last night. There were probably 10 trees around a campus parking lot. All of them had a decent crop of acorns scattered around them.
After spotting them...
Got a question about zeolite.
After watching some videos on scent control, I decided I wanted to try some zeolite. I ordered 25lbs of it from a company called refreshingly free. It's in powder form. When I opened the bag, it has an odor to it. I wouldn't know how to describe it. Anyways, I...
Just wanted to give a quick update. Over the last 4 days, I have taken the dogs for a ride in the back of the truck. I have a carpeted Bedliner so I have been putting my air rifle back there with them. He's still a little skittish if I have it in my hands. Once it's in the bed, they don't...
Hi, I'm Lucas.
I live in Southeast MO. I'm 36, married, with a 5 year old son. My dad has a family farm. Helped him and the neighbors through childhood and adolescence. Started working for a local sawmill at 16.
Went to college, became an industrial electrician and returned to the sawmill...
