Not even every other year sometimes. Could be several yrs between crops or sometimes several decent yrs in a row. Just not as regular as things like apple trees which can usually count on every yr or every other yr
I did a few times years ago. Not a spitter but still enough bitterness that not great. Dolgo which is ripe same time is more "mild" than this one if that helps with comparison. The dolgo hasn't dropped much yet though so the hoovers are getting what they can
Here is a pic from a week ago of a red splendor seedling. A bit larger fruit than normal for those at 1 to 1-1/8" and some red flesh. This tree drops quickly and checking yesterday about half is gone. Like really gone. Deer poop everywhere under this thing. Nothing really special, just another...
Guessing whomever wrote that article visits the fruit section on this forum once in awhile.
Maybe the author should have gotten your permission before listing all the ones you've named lol.
Seems to be a fan of Midwest deer trees and blue hill wildlife nursery among others
I see OP wants to find bigger trees if possible and some of those you have to pick up instead of ship. Noticed that Wallace Woodstock Nursery has posted basically going out of business and clearing out their fields but no updates yet on what they might have going into this fall and possibly next...
With a ton of popple to start with, doubt that site has a lot of clay. See those spots have more of a sandy/gravel type soil at least in WI.
What does your site have for soil?
Agree M7 is ok for wildlife tree but not going to put out buckets of fruit as it gets older. After 10-15 yrs will think wish that tree could grow a bit bigger but at about 60% of full size it is at least on the larger side of the semi dwarf ones. It also does not need lifelong staking like some...
Not sure what is happening in northern MN but eastern spruce budworm is a major bug pest in North America and really likes balsam fir along with the spruces. Serious outbreaks seem to occur every several decades and across Canada millions of acres can be impacted during the worst episodes.
Warren Buffett and Clint Eastwood say you got another 25 yrs almost anyway to go out and give'er. Although I believe Buffett just punched his I'm retired tag this yr at 94.
Semi related note, my bigger chestnut crab was violated again this yr. Would guess raccoons. When younger the critters busted the top off this tree twice.
They completely leave the Whitney crab alone a short distance away. But I share their opinion as well between the two.
Probably way past the peak for oak wilt fungal spreading where you are at. Up here in WI advisory is not to prune April 15th thru July 15th. Get to it when you can
Thanks for the feedback fellas so far. Interesting that TC sees this with some regularity. First time have really noticed any here. Maybe next time over there will try cutting a red one in half and compare the seeds to a nearby green one. Doesn't seem that there are two red next to each other...
