Chance of freeze damage - pear vs persimmon

My oldest pears are only 4-5 years old. Two Collette's and a Bartlett. Those trees "should" be fruiting soon, hopefully this year. However, they are next to a beaver pond, obviously pretty low lying. I will watch them this year to see if they bloom and/or fruit. They are still young enough that...

Granny Smith Apple trees in full blossom

Unfortunately, no. These are all trees bought through our local county conservation district tree sale.

Granny Smith Apple trees in full blossom

I have several apples in the vicinity. There's a Red Delicious, Gala, and Fuji all within 15 yards, and probably a dozen apple or crabapples trees within 200 yards. The Red Delicious is less than half the size of the Granny Smith, but has produced for 2 years already.

Granny Smith Apple trees in full blossom

Are Granny Smith's slow to bear fruit? I have one at our house and another planted at my in-laws about 8 miles away. Both trees planted in 2020 I believe. They are great looking trees, probably around 10-12' tall. But neither have fruited yet.

Chance of freeze damage - pear vs persimmon

I wish I would have seen this thread three years ago when I first began planting pears! I have roughly 10 pears (out of 18 total) that I would consider in lower lying areas. Maybe not the lowest around but definitely close by. They are all young and have not fruited yet. I will keep an eye on...

2 Favorite Trees for Every Month

My trees are still pretty young so my contributions to this are limited. Zone 4B now 5a. Heavy clay soils. October - Liberty November - tough to beat Droptine and Enterprise. Both are producing a decent amount in year 4. Could also add Arkansas Black here. December - my focus going forward...

Pears, If you were to pick just 3?

I’m still 3-4 years away from contributing to this thread. Planted my first pears in 2020 - those 3 have finally added decent growth and will maybe push out a few fruit in 2024. Second batch was planted in 2022 - 2 Korean Giants from Blue Hill. Not much growth so far but healthy looking trees...

Local Crabapples your keeping an eye on?

My latest find. Sits at a gas station in a local town. Knew about it for a while but never paid much attention to its characteristics. Drove by recently and saw that it’s still a good amount of fruit. I present the Admiral Crab (it’s at an Admiral gas station, original I know). Lots of...

    Grafting rootstock vs. bareroot

I’ve spent well over $1000 on fruit trees the last few years. I’m not getting any younger and I want these producing as quickly as possible. Buying the biggest sizes I can. Probably close to 50 at camp alone and another dozen at home. I’m excited to see how they do. My heavy clay soils seem to...

    Grafting rootstock vs. bareroot

I have 15 rootstocks from Blue Hill coming in the spring. I also have a dozen or so root suckers from wild trees at deer camp that I plan to dig up and graft onto. Since I am new to grafting, I had initially planned to graft then plant in my garden the first year so I can baby them. Then...

    Grafting rootstock vs. bareroot

New to grafting. What root maker pots do you use?

Local Crabapples your keeping an eye on?

I have this crab growing in my home property. I’m going to attempt grafting it for the first time next spring. Would love a dozen of these trees at the hunting property.
