When does winter wheat go dormant in Virginia?

I have a friend that wants to plant - actually did plant - winter wheat and he wanted to know when it would go dormant this winter. He is in northern Virginia and I told him I did not know. I did tell him that Rye grain would probably grow some all winter for him.

Winter wheat is pretty hardy as well and can survive some lower 20’s before it goes dormant.

Good question! In northern Virginia it may never go dormant. Growth slows down, though. When depends on soil temperatures. Things really start to hinge at 50-degrees. Around here some Novembers are way too warm..Other
years way too cold. Practically, if you want a calendar date pick the week after Thanksgiving.

Thanks guys. I knew you all would have some intell. I think he just planted it and it should germinate no problem. I also think it is more for next spring, but am not sure. He is new to the game and is doing a little of everything. A lot like a kid in the candy story trying it all to see what he likes - yep he has already spit out a few chocolates that were too rich for his taste.
