Wanting to start a co-op in WI

for those that have started co-op's, how did you do it? My initial plan is to invite suppounding land owners to the town hall for free beer. I think I can hook peoples ear with three goals. 1-see more deer, 2-see bigger deer, 3-keep some meat in the freezer. Then bring up how we as land owners can make this happen.

Have you checked to see if you are near any guys who are already doing it now? A bit more specific info on your actual location within WI would be helpful as well.

I'm in North East Marathon County in the town of Hewitt. No one has a co-op that I'm aware of.

Are you close to County HH? I would think you are some where between me and BJE80. As far as I know there are no co-ops in the area. Good luck as most of the locals have brown it's down mentality.

I know it won't be easy but there are a few bigger chunks that are well managed. If I can connect them we'd be in good shape. HH is the county line and is about 13 miles straight East of me.

You and Brad [BJE80] have to be real close.

As the other guys said I am in the town of Hewitt as well. I just answered your pm. We can discuss it here or over pm.

Are you a local or a vacant land owner?

Wisc will be a land owner in by us in the near future too. ;)

If you are actually really serious about it I have to tell you some things about it. Maybe by phone.

I will let you know in a week or so....running some numbers and making some contacts before I get my hopes up.......

I just saw this thread. If some of you guys are close enough to get a co-op going in your area, it'll be cool following what you guys are up to and get accomplished. Best to all involved !!

I don't want to rain on your parade, but this was tried in my area, Southern Portage county, with no success. It had to be 20 years ago and just never took hold. Everyone wanted other guys to pass on small bucks, and then they shot them on their land. Kind of sad for sure, but that is the reality you will be dealing with.
I wish you all the best in your effort to start a coop.

I agree ... Opening day basically meant everyone's gentlemen's agreement was out the door. Every year everyone asked how do I shoot what I do? I would go through the same stories of sanctuaries, passing young deer, etc, etc.

They all were in amazement (not that I had any real knowledge) and agreed. Then every opener they would hunt the way they always hunted, get frustrated, and then start driving there property. Over time they began to resent me if I ever brought up any thoughts like this ... got to blame someone I guess so I stopped discussing the concept.

Spend time enjoying your property, enjoy your way of hunting, neighbors never see things the same way when horns show.
