tractor tires, fronts...

well, I need tires on the ole girl.... weathered, cracked, leak, no tread left.
so I fired up tractor data, first page says 16 6 tires on the front. so I tap away on the keyboard and 4 days later a pair of nice 3 ribs show up, exactly what I wanted, nice bite for steering. get my old rims off, and wouldn't you know it, my tractor has 15 inch rims..... grrrrr fire up tractor data again, tires, details.... turf tires are 27 8.5 15. yeah, my tractor was set up for turf use, son of a gun, gotta ship the trip ribs back. so much for saving money. any who, I would like to toss a pair on and never look back, thinking a real meaty with lots of plies for puncture resistance. what do you tractor guys think of these ?

they should work, and last a long time.

I'm no expert, but I would think the triple ribs would steer better wouldn't they?

Maybe if you have a FEL and 4 wheel assist the front is heavier than mine.... It seems my front end is never heavy enough.

For the reasons you describe, I always take my old tires/rims to the local shop and beg for mercy. It seems I can never figure out what tire I need. I let the experts figure it out.

no fel, no 4 wheel drive....... I have a 125 lb weight bolted up front as a bumper, otherwise its steer by independent brakes when the disc is in the air.

not sure what tractor you have, but I have had many OLDER tractors that when time came to replace , TRUCK tires were added, due to well, cost's old farmers were not rich back then!
all worked fine, the 1949 Model H had them on it for about 40 yrs(same tires too LOL) and all held air and steered just fine, others had the rib'd tractor fronts and were only 2 wheel drive, and they steered just as well, NOT a huge difference, BUt if you drive in mud or very soft dirt, treads fill on the truck tires and your on slicks, , key then is going slower at turns and faster on straights to try and get self cleaning going!
have you looked maybe at some tractor salvage yards for some 16 inch wheels??, or tire wheels combo's??

91 jd 1070 2 wd good idea about a salvage yard, but the garden state is less and less about farming these days. finding a salvage yard would be tough.

yeah, but don't forget shipping isn;'t always that bad today, selling and making some $$ is better to a lot of salvage yards than it sitting in the yard on them??

even look on E BAY, many guys there do free shipping??

all comes down to what NEW one's costs as to looking at used one's

never know, but think LONG term here too, tires on the front will last YRS and YRS, cost per yr get silly cheap if you look at it that way LOL

have you looked at places like this, and just got NEW 16 inch wheels??

you should be 5.5x 16 or a 6x16??
this place also can get used parts too

little more, they list back spacing info here if nothing else!
but about 400 a set for brand new tries and wheels, which would maybe out last you LOL

lots of options, I have no trouble with the rims I have, not looking to buy them but thanks. I am just looking for ideas, and appreciate the one you offered, thanks.

no problem, I honestly wouldn;t do the skid steer tires on the front, they pack way too easy and will be just slicks, better off buying a tractor front tire, that one link had 2 front tires for like a 100 bucks, that's not a bad deal, and will work on the wheels you have right now, 15 inch one's

even though I have 8.5 inch wide rims?

let me ask a buddy that works with tires what he thinks

but from the info I seen on that tractor, it thought it listed it as having 6 inch wide x 15 inch wheels??
I'll give him a call tomnorrow and let you know what he say
I know you can get a narrower tire on a wider wheel, but just HOW well it will stay there not 100%, but he will know!

John Deere 1070 Tires:

2WD Standard tires (ag): Front: 6.00-16. Rear: 13.6-24
4WD Standard tires (ag): Front: 8-16. Rear: 13.6-28
Lawn/turf front: 27x8.50-15
Lawn/turf rear: 13.6-28
44x18.00-20

I have the lawn turf tire setup, yup, 28 inch wide rears, tractor got a big but and I can not lie.

They have an equipment auction at least once a year and will sell any day you show up. Never know what you'll find or what they have in the yard on any given day. Worth a trip just to get a look around. The old man has enough antique tractors restored to open a museum.

Might be worth a call. Ask for Muggzy. Very fair people.

Oh and when you get that corn seed it's only another 20 minutes to his place.

sorry on delay here, my buddy hasn';t called me back yet, I am guessing he is swamped with work, with planting season closing in, IF I don't hear from him by Monday I will stop down where he works and ask, as won't take long to answer me LOL
But that size tire from the AG supply link I sent you will work for sure?

OK just talked to my buddy and he told me those I listed the 5x15 will be too narrow for an 8 inch wide wheel
BUT he said you could get away with a 7lx15 tire, or better yet a 9.5Lx 15, or even a 11L x 15
they will run from about 75-125 bucks each! you can see them listed here for example, and could maybe find better deals on EBay or??

here is what I seen real quick on EBay, 150 free shipping each? so 300 for a set for the front?
should last a LONG time, so, don't look at it as that bad?? will work way better than Skid steer tires, and I just bought a set of 4 for my skid steer yesterday LOL
so I have real seat time in a skid steer, they pack way too fast!
