Thatch/Seeding

Eightpter

Yearling... With promise
Is this thatch is too thick for seeding lc fall mix? It's 1-2" thick. Field was overgrown and hasn't been worked for a long time. I disced it under early summer and hit it with gly. I was going to seed oats, wr, and awp and lightly disc, then seed the clover and ghr on top. Or I could rake up some of the thatch before seeding. I'm limited in equipment (ATV/GH Maxx), my concern is the seed making its way down to the soil or will it germinate in the thatch?

Picture is too large to post. Any idea on how to reduce size?

How big of an area are you planting? If your planning on discing your seed in you should be fine. You want seed to soil contact. I would either sow the big seed oats, wr and peas, very lightly disc and run ATV tires to pack the seed and soil together or lightly disc, sow the large seed and run the ATV tires over it and then sow the smaller seed clover and radishes and run the ATV over the plot one more time.

It's roughly a half acre. I think I'll seed and then disc to cover them. That should at least get the larger seeds covered.

I think from looking at that pic that you'll need to lightly disk. For an ideal throw n mow planting, you would like for the last crop of thatch you added to be fully decomposed and nearly gone so that you're broadcasting seed onto a soil surface that's a lot closer to potting soil than intact thatch. You probably won't get good germination if you broadcast on top of that layer of thatch in the pic.

How did that work out for you?
