squirrels vanished this winter

I looked up from the kitchen sink at the squirrel box and saw this yesterday.....it was nice here so they decided to come and and stretch some and enjoy the sunshine. Spent most of the day up on the roof of the box in the sunshine! The wife swears it's one of the two we released but I have no idea if it is or not....

We have four squirrel boxes up in our back yard, it's neat to see the little ones in the spring peaking out. For whatever reason we only have gray squirrels in town but out in the country its all fox squirrels, with both the black phase and variations are getting more common here.

All I have are fox squirrels. My folks place has grey and fox. As much as I get frustrated with squirrels while deer hunting they are certainly interesting to watch up close and to see just how quickly they grow and mature. The boxes we put up had originally build for screech owls, but I converted them to our needs. I wasn't even sure if they would continue to use them....but I know at least one is still used.

Ours have squirrels in them almost year round, I try and clean them once a year when it looks like they are not using them. We get the screech owls in our wood duck boxes out at the farm in the winter time...they are very neat to see, haven't had any try and nest in them yet...usually just a winter thing.

Just goes to show the value of a cavity tree to wildlife.
