Spring 2018 Fruit/Nut Tree Orders

Bowsnbucks

5 year old buck +
I figured I may as well start this. Having returned from hunting camp, my thoughts have turned to spring planting ( as have the thoughts of our camp members ).

Our order for camp - so far - is 1 Goldrush, 1 Priscilla, 1 Ida Red, 1 Chestnut crab, and 1 Trailman crab apple. I've already ordered 4 Chinese Chestnut trees back in November.

I said last year that our camp was out of space and done planting fruit trees. But we're cutting down/pulling stumps from 2 ornamental pears ( 20 years old ) that only feed birds, and I'm pulling a couple rootstocks that never grew. I'm clearing a spot as well, so we have additional space. I guess I should not say " done ".

2 Goldrush, 1 Honeycrisp, 4 Kieffer, 3 Chinese Chestnut.....did a ton of planting 2 and 3 years ago....replacing my old, dying apple trees with pears from now on....don’t have as much time as I would like to maintenance of apples. Previous orders had consisted of various late drop crabs, Kieffer and Hybrid Pears mostly from Morse Nursery. Swamp White Oaks and Northern Red Oaks from conservation district sales.

I've got another half dozen crab apples coming from NWC, a bunch of white pine and white cedar to keep working on road screen, fifty high top cranberry, twenty five hazelnut, ten Chinese chestnut and I plan on picking up a few more Dunstan's when they show up at RK to ad to my shrub strips.
I put in another fifteen pears this fall and another cherry from Stark and Cummins. After this next spring it should finally slow down and it should be just replanting in the road screen as needed and an odd apple or pear as I see a variety I want to try out.

Well, I have an order of 50 fruit trees from Cummins for next year. This should be my last big year of fruit tree planting after doing 60 of them last year. I have 80 or so chestnuts in my fridge now I am going to try and grow out over this winter and plant this spring as well. 25 hazel nuts are on order from the county conservation group.

One Snowsweet.

No scion ordered.

I am going cold turkey!

3 Galarinas, 3 Arkansas Blacks, 1 Goldrush, 2 Chestnut crabs, and 2 Kerr crabs. I keep thinking I'm out of room but always find a new location. This is more addictive then hunting.

Rest of the story... I am going to collect some scion from two seedling crabs that I really like and add them to some flowering crabs.

Art - Those crabs are fantastic !! ^^^^^^ What do they taste like ??

It’s still early, but so far I have 1 Harrison Crab, 1 Collaos, 1 Redfield, 1 Goldrush, and 1 Galarina on order from Cummins, all on B.118 rootstocks. I hope to add an Enterprise on the same rootstock by spring. The common thread with all these trees is that they become larger trees that drop late, Ideally late October through December.

We have been working on a new project that we will hopefully finish up this spring. Just trying to change it up a bit. Deer will benefit from this project but really this project is for critters beyond deer, mainly song birds and butterflies.

We are adding a new 20-25 tree fruit tree orchard. It had been sprayed real well with roundup over the past 1.5 years. In spring 2017 I planted 3 Plum (Castleton, Reine Claude Conducata, Vision) trees I purchased from Cummin's. End of July we tilled it and gave it a heavy planting of winter rye and medium red clover. The deer have been in there thick, tearing it up and all fall we planted tons of NWSG and a large variety of wildflowers (forbs). We figured it would be a good opportunity to broadcast all of this seed in there while the deer are stepping it in for us. It should be an extremely diverse prairie planting.

I'm going to try some wildflower blends this spring too. ^^^
Mostly along the spoil pile from digging the ponds, it's mostly planted to native grasses now. I finally have a good lead on a local bee guy to help me with putting some hives in. My wife is all about butterflies and flowers and I get a kick out of adding another link to my habitat project.

CrazyEd ... maybe you should diversify a bit? Haha! That's quite a list you have there!

I thought they tasted great. My wife and sister in law thought they were way to sour, but I like dolgo crabs also.

@2ndHand - you're a fermentin' fool - plain to see! You keep us posted on that cider orchard! Nice choices. Harrison is on my list for sure.

Thanks for the comment Jhoss! About a month ago I purchased a cider press, washer, bottler, 300 gal bulk tank and related equipment from an orchard in MI. It will be a few years for the hard cider to kick in but I look forward to the adventure!!
